I've lived in Vietnam for more than seven years. This was the most memorable negative experience I've had. I hired a private car from Ninh Binh to Hanoi Airport. I don't write negative reviews, but I figure this is the right time. First of all, the driver was on time. No issues with the vehicle. Also: we weren't in a rush. I had plenty of time upon departure for a nice, normal taxi ride. 1. It took over 4 hours (from 3 PM to past 7 PM) to get from Ninh Binh to Hanoi Airport. The trip is usually 2.5 to 3 hours. The driver tried numerous times to take side streets through neighborhoods in the middle of nowhere, only to get stuck each time because the roads were too small and cars/trucks were coming in the opposite direction. A few times, we were pinned tightly, sitting there with endless honking, reversing, etc. Several times I thought about abandoning the driver, getting ou,t and booking a Grab myself from the middle of nowhere. But he was cutting through completely random roads off the main highway. Instead of using the main highway from Ninh Binh directly, he kept trying shortcuts, which added 1+ hours to the trip. 2. His phone was getting hundreds of Zalo messages and he never shut off his volume. 3. He honked hundreds of times. Every scooter we passed, every car, he honked over and over. No exaggeration: hundreds of honks. 4. After 4 hours, when he was finally on the right road...with Hanoi Airport 2 minutes ahead...HE PULLS INTO THE LEFT LANE AND DOES A U-TURN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. This added another 20+ minutes until we could take random roads to find another U-turn back in the correct direction. This all happened with 2 forms of GPS. He had GPS on the car's main screen. And he also had GPS going on his phone with Google Maps. I know because the entire car ride, the phone was speaking Vietnamese driving directions to him. I'm a travel writer, and I built and own the biggest Vietnam-specific travel blog. Will 100% take the train next time.

We were picked up by a car which was to small for 5 passengers with all their lugage. We sat squished in for almost half an hour to the office. From there we were asked to enter another bus for the ride to Hanoi which stopped at several places. At the office we were transferred again to another car which was also very small for 5 passagers with all their luggage. This ride brought us to the airport. We're definitely not going to book a transfer like this again.

The van was comfortable and the driver drove well. Communication with the company via WhatsApp was efficient, and they picked me up at my hotel. However, we arrived at the airport more than an hour later than the time I had been told. It wasn’t an issue for me because I had planned enough time, but don’t expect to arrive at the exact time indicated. The van didn’t go directly to the airport: we were dropped off in Hanoi and had to switch to a car. We had to wait 20–30 minutes for the driver to arrive. In addition, the car driver who picked me up at the hotel to bring me to the van drove very aggressively, and I did not feel comfortable with him at all.

The first part with the car was not good, the driver made me feel very uncomfortable, in the end touching my upper thigh, was constantly scrolling TikTok while driving also. Second part in the van was fine.
