Hanoi to Da Nang Destination Reviews

SA
I awoke around 5am to find my legs covered in insect bites and itching, having spent the day in a couple of bars with a friend, not being near vegetation, and wearing chinos and socks all day I can only ascertain this came from the train. The bites are severe and have had to seek advice from a pharmacist to aid recovery but my legs looks a mess, 24 bites in all only on lower leg. I expected to have more of a food service offered in cabin or guidance to a buffet car, only a bag of potato chips, small waffle, soft banana, water and Coca Cola was left at the start of the journey so nothing else to eat from 20:50 Thursday to 15:00 Friday when I checked in to my hotel. I have pictures of the damage the bites have done should you wish to view

PS
We booked for 2 people in a 4 beds cabin, and got upgraded in a deluxe private cabin. The journey was comfortable, the scenery wonderful. It was a bit hard to sleep because of the train moving a lot and making some noise, but that was expected. The 16hours ride felt shorter than we thought. The train left and arrived ~15minutes late but that wasnt a problem. Would book it again!

The only thing missing from this experience is a better meal. Breakfast did not live up to expectations for a VIP/Luxury Cabin.

I wanted to write the best review, however the last two hours or so prevented that. 2 hour into our destination I received a WhatsApp txt message claiming he was the owner of HK bus tours, his name was David and that his company put us on the wrong bus. After several minutes of back and forth I took it upon myself to show the driver where we needed to be dropped off based on our ticket purchased and he agreed. Because of this our time on the trip felt ruined as I was confused about the situation as a whole especially when the owner started talking about mitorbikes scamming us and how it would’ve be his fault and to not blame him. We understand the language barrier but he was really confused and was not giving proper information. When I asked why he put us on the wrong bus he started deleted all of his messages. I was able to screen shot most. On a second note when I contacted the company directly they stated that he was NOT affiliated with the company which stressed me out even more because how was he able to get our full names, phone numbers, location and end destination. All in all I feel there was unprofessional mis management of the whole situation. We would not recommend booking with this company.

The train was fine and we like the trip. I rate 4, not 5, only because a system of a getting tickets at the railway station was unclear. It would be great for future to get more corrective instructions.

Should I tip taxi in Da Nang?

Tipping taxi drivers in Da Nang is not a common practice, but it is appreciated. Most fares include the cost of the ride, and drivers don’t expect additional tips. However, rounding up to the nearest 10,000 VND or leaving small change is seen as courteous, especially for good service. Some taxi companies, such as Mai Linh or Vinasun, have consistent pricing and reliable drivers. If you receive exceptional service, such as help with heavy luggage or efficient route navigation, a modest tip is a kind gesture. Keep in mind that cash is preferred since digital tipping options may not be available.
  • Standard tipping: Rounding up the fare.
  • Cash tips are most appreciated.
  • Helpful for exceptional service but not required.
Offering a tip is entirely at your discretion but shows gratitude in a way drivers understand.

The decision depends on lifestyle preferences, work, and climate. Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, offers rich history, cultural landmarks, and a larger urban economy, making it ideal for career opportunities and experiencing northern traditions. • Hanoi: Capital, cultural hub, cooler climate.
  • Da Nang: Coastal, relaxed, warmer weather.

Both cities offer distinct advantages, so evaluate personal priorities when choosing.
