Better hospitals: Koh Lanta or Phuket?

Phuket generally offers better hospital facilities compared to Koh Lanta. Phuket has several international-standard hospitals, including Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Phuket International Hospital, which cater to both locals and tourists with comprehensive medical services. These hospitals are well-equipped and have English-speaking staff.

Koh Lanta has more limited medical facilities, with only smaller clinics and a local hospital that can handle basic medical needs. For serious medical conditions or emergencies, patients are often transferred to Trang or Phuket.

For travelers needing reliable healthcare, Phuket is the preferable choice. Always ensure you have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, especially when visiting areas with limited healthcare facilities.

Do you need a passport to go to Koh Lanta from Phuket?

No passport is required for travel between Phuket and Koh Lanta as both are located within Thailand. You can travel between these destinations using a ferry or speedboat.

The ferry ride typically takes 1.5 to 3 hours, with ticket prices ranging from 350 to 600 THB ($10 to $17). Speedboats are faster, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours, and cost between 1,200 to 1,500 THB ($33 to $42).

It is advisable to carry a valid form of identification, such as a national ID card if you are a Thai citizen, or your passport if you are a foreign visitor, in case it is needed for hotel check-in or other formalities.

Yet a similarly popular and good option to be considered, especially in the low season, is travelling via Krabi by van and bus. That said, there are also direct highspeed ferries, van transfers and taxis plying this route. Travelling overland can take you anywhere from 5 hours up as the road distance between Koh Lanta and Phuket is about 240 km. Ferris can do a much faster job as they have to travel 100-120 km, depending on the route.

Tigerline travel also offers ferry services from the Koh Lanta Ban Sala Dan Pier to the Ao Por Pier, Phuket and Klong Hia Pier, Koh Yao Yai for the same price.

If you would like to dock at the Nam Chai Pier, Phuket, make your way to the Sala Dan Pier, Koh Lanta at 8.00am. You’ll require THB 1,000 for this trip.

There is also at least one Sea Angel Cruise boat leaving Koh Lanta Ban Saladan Pier to any hotel in Phuket for THB 1,400 at 8.00am, but it calls to Koh Phi Phi en route what brings the total travel time to whooping 9 hours and thus is not recommended.

As mentioned above, a popular option is to take a larger express boat from Koh Lanta to Phuket which leaves at 1.30pm (check the departure time as it may vary). Although expensive, this is the easiest and probably most comfortable way to get to Phuket from Koh Lanta rather than by sea which can be uncomfortable during stormy weather.

Recommended operators include Lanta Gardenhill or Andaman Taxi Service. Both have 3- and 9-passenger options and it is probably a better idea to opt for the latter and the price difference is not that big but level of comfort is higher. A 9-pax air-conditioned van from any hotel on Koh Lanta to the Phuket Airport will cost you THB 4,500 and to Patong, Karon, and Kata in Phuket for THB 5,300.

Note: Lanta Gardenhill does not allow for cancellations or refunds.

Vans bring you to the Krabi bus terminal from where big buses and vans to Phuket operate – you will not need to change the terminal. There is a great choice of direct and passing through buses to Phuket. All of them take about 4 hours and tickets should cost just under THB200. In Phuket, buses arrive to the Phuket Bus Terminal in Phuket Town.

Vans from Krabi to Phuket cost more but there are options to be dropped-off right in the area you are staying. E.g. Jolly Travel offers van transfer to Kata and Patong beaches for THB500.

There are also option to get from Krabi to Phuket by ferry but taking into consideration the cost of the trip (from THB700) it does not seen very reasonable compared to overland transportation.

A taxi from Krabi to Phuket will cost you from THB2,700 for a 9-passenger van for the northernmost beaches like Mai Khao, Kamala or Surin; add extra THB800 for Patong, Kata or Karon.

It was fast and almost dry. We didnt stop at koh phi phi as other reviews say. Luggage is put on the boat by the crew. We had 2 big suitcases and 2 carry on size backpacks. All and all a great transfer, although if you are prone to sea sickness, it will probably happen :) we had a windy day but low wave height, but my wife still got sick.

It was a good journey and as comfortable as you’d expect. We had a stop where we could get a drink and go to the toilet if needed. However there were loads of random stops that had no explanations and no times given. It didn’t really make a difference as we were comfortable enough but it would’ve been nice to have a heads up or some info of how long we were stopping etc but overall a good trip.

Overbooked, was mean to go straight to Phuket from Koh Lanta but they stopped at phi phi island and picked up more passengers then they realised it’s overbooked and no seats they had to get them out of the boat was just waste of time stopping.

The ferries from Ko Lanta to Phuket were great, we had to change in Phi Phi and it was all organised well. The organisation of being assigned mini buses was also great. However, the transfer to Patong was awful. The driver was the worst we had in Thailand. Constantly accelerating full speed and slamming on the brakes. He near crashed into the back of so many cars. He was too busy watching youtube and facebook videos than concentrating on the road. I think we were unlucky with our driver.

Pick-up from the hotel on time. Ferry halfway within the time frame. You always have to reckon with delays.

The Van stopped a million times and the driver never informed us about how long we'll be at those random stops. Sometimes it was a minute, other times 20 minutes, so it was unclear whether we should stay inside the very full and not very comfortable mini van or if we can catch some air outside. Van also stopped at a bus stop about half way through and we had to switch busses. Which was very unexpected and the driver (again) didn't really explain what's happening. Very strange experience. Recommend taking the ferries instead.
