How to get to Phuket from Bangkok

What about

Love it or hate it: the Pearl of the Andaman is too developed, too commercialized, too trendy and, well, sometimes – too expensive. Yet its sandy beaches, fashionable spas, outstanding diving sites and high-class dining venues continue to lure hordes of tourists from literally every corner of the world. There are endless opportunities for going on an adventure – from snorkelling or surfing to yachting and kayaking, and if you wish to taste the real cosmopolitan flavour of the island, spend a bit of time exploring streets of Phuket Town clogged with coffee shops and art galleries, hip affordable guesthouses and stately Sino-Portuguese mansions. Be ready to pay more for food, lodging and transport than in any other Thai resort city or island, relax and just enjoy your experience.

Getting to Phuket

Being the largest island in Thailand, Phuket sometimes does not feel as an island at all: even getting there from the mainland does not require any sea travel. The 700m Saphan Thepkasattri linked the northernmost tip of Phuket to Phang Nga Province on the mainland in 2011. It runs parallel to a smaller Saphan Sarasin which was built in 1967 to replace the ferry connection with the island and now serves as a pedestrian bridge.

From Bangkok to Phuket by bus

Buses from Bangkok to Phuket leave from the Southern bus terminal, Sai Tai Mai. It is located on Phutthamonthon Sai Road in Thonburi district on the western side of the Chao Phraya River and is easily accessible by taxi. The route is served by a number of companies, including Phuket Travel and Bus Express. You can choose between express buses (THB660-THB690) and plusher VIP24 ones (THB1000). In VIP24 there are 3 seats per row, which means more space for your legs and elbows. All buses provide snacks, air-conditioning and blankets and make several pit stops along the route at large gas stations with convenience stores, cafes and toilets. There are early morning buses at 6.30am and 6.40am and a wide choice of afternoon and evening departures from 2.30pm to 9.30pm. All of them cover the distance between Bangkok and Phuket in about 13 hours. There are buses from the Northern bus terminal in Bangkok, Morchit, too.

Buses from Bangkok arrive to the recently constructed Bus Station 2 Bo-Ko-So Terminal which is located some four km to the north of the centre in Phuket Town. The terminal also serves buses from/to many of the Thai southern cities.

Tip: During the peak season it is highly recommended to book tickets in advance.

From Bangkok to Phuket by train

There are no direct trains from Bangkok to Phuket, the nearest transfer point being Suratthani. Trains from Bangkok to Suratthani leave from Hua Lamphong train station in Bangkok, easily accessible from the MRT subway. By far the most convenient train is the night one #85 departing at 7.30pm and arriving in Suratthani at 7.10am, but you have many other options, as well. You can choose the 1st or the 2nd class sleeper, both of which are air-conditioned and provide enough privacy and comfort for an overnight journey. The price is approximately THB1550 and THB1000 correspondingly.

Suratthani train station is located in the town of Phun Phin, some 15 km away. From there, buses leave regularly both for Suratthani and other southern destinations, including Phuket. You can plan your combination journey by yourself or opt for a train+bus joint ticket. If you book a joint train+bus ticket from Bangkok to Phuket, you can catch a 7.45am standard air-con Phantip Travel bus to Phuket (THB 250, almost 4 hrs).

Note that a combination train+bus journey from Bangkok to Phuket takes longer than a direct bus from the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok (15½ hrs compared to 13 hours), but you can sleep with more comfort while travelling by railway. Both 1st (THB1550) and 2nd class (THB1000) AC carts give you enough privacy, so a longer journey may proof a better choice at the end of the day.

Island hopping from Phuket

Though Phuket sometimes lacks that typical island atmosphere, it still provides a good chance to taste some of the other ‘real’ islands. Just choose your destination and start your island hopping.

From Phuket to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao

Lomprayah offers combined bus+ high-speed ferry service from Phuket to the islands of the Gulf. The whole journey takes 6½ hrs to Koh Samui, 7½ hrs to Koh Phangan and 8¾ hrs to Koh Tao.

From Phuket to Koh Phi-Phi

During the peak season there is between 5 and 6 ferries a day linking Phuket to the pristine island of Phi Phi. Though it gets more and more developed nowadays, the scenery fortunately remains just breath-taking.

From Phuket to Koh Lanta, the Trang islands and Koh Lipe

Ferries going from Phuket to Koh Lanta, the Trang islands and Koh Lipe connect through Koh Phi-Phi. Get ready to jump from one boat to another which is sometimes a bit of a nervous experience.

**Tip: If your are prone to seasickness, get the necessary medicine at hand.

Want something different? Visit Phang Nga and Khao Lak

Lush jungles and impressive karst formations of the mainland and spectacular islands dotting pristine sea waters, secret caves and beautiful beaches without that excessive glamour of Phuket but with enough facilities to feel comfortable during your holiday are awaiting you in Phang Nga province. If you want fewer people on the beach, head to Khao Lak, which also serves as a great base for further inland explorations.

Lignite bus company operates buses both to Phang Nga Town and Khao Lak from the Southern bus terminal in Bangkok. There are night Express, VIP and VIP24 buses to Phang Nga – all departing around 7pm; tickets cost from THB600 to THB970 depending on the type of the bus you choose. Note that the express bus of Lignite at 6.40pm goes directly to Phang Nga and does not call to Khao Lak. For Khao Lak use the VIP and VIP24 which leave at 7.05pm. Travel time is about 10¼ hours.

You can also get to Khao Lak directly from Phuket Airport. PGS company offers a Toyota Camry for 3 pax at THB1920 from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak. Transit time is about two hours and the rate is all-inclusive.

Getting around in Phuket

Phuket taxis are notorious for their hefty rates. The public transport is limited and has a form of huge trucks. They cruise between Phuket Town and the beaches which is terribly inconvenient as in most cases you need to connect through Phuket Town to go from one beach to another, and the journey eventually takes you hours.

Motorbikes and Scooters are a good way to get around. The majority of the rental shops will require your passport which they keep until you bring the rented vehicle back. Cases when the rental shops would insist on reimbursing ‘damage’ to their scooters are not unheard of; so check carefully what you rent and make photos of any scratches you find before you commit. The daily rate for a scooter is about THB200-THB300. There are also bigger bikes available for rent.

Renting a car is a good option which gives you both freedom and safety. A car can usually be hired for around THB1200 per day, but in low season rates sometimes fall below THB800. Cheap car rental companies can be found in Thanon Rasada. As a rule, local companies offer better rates, but you can sometimes find online promotions when booking with global operators.

At 12Go our operators offer three types of service:

Cheap, Fast, Good - but you can usually pick only two of them!
Cheap & Fast won’t be Good. (e.g. buses from/to Khao San Road, local buses or 3rd class trains)
Cheap & Good won’t be Fast. (e.g. VIP trains in Thailand)
Fast & Good won’t be Cheap. (e.g. private limousine services, or VIP24 buses vs Express buses)

Make your choice! Please remember that though we are closely monitoring services, we are still an agency marketplace - meaning we focus on ticketing service and route availability / coverage rather than on factual seat recline angle you got today ^_^

Comfortable bus. Friendly stuff. Departed on time and arrived earlier than expected. They provided snack. And we stop for free food in the middle of the trip. I slept well. Recommend if you are on the budget like me. I took a 19.30 bus and arrived to Phuket at 8.30 am. Thank you for your service!

2nd class with fans was pretty noisey and bumpy. 2nd class AC carriage was more modern and I wonder if it was quieter and smoother. Bear in mind cheaper carriages might contain younger, more exhuberant travellers. Mind did. He was tiresome.

Very poor customer service. My train got cancelled because of the flooding hapenning in the south of Thailand, no one got in touch with me to inform me. Thankfully, I saw an announcement at the train station. Additionnally, I requested a full refund as they could no longer provide the service I booked, they didn't want to do it at first and I had to insist and negociate. If you can't provide a journey booked by a customer, just issue a full refund. Period.

I am very disappointed as our trip to Koh Phangan did not go through because of the flooding. I would like a full refund for the train/bus and ferry trip, as I even bought travel insurance as well. I do not understand why the train station would not know that they could not make it through because of the flooding. I know have to spend more money to try and get over to my destination. I would not pre book again.

★★★☆☆ Jan 5, 2017 (train #83 VIP Sleeper, Thai Railways) :
Great app and smooth service from 12go. Picked up tickets opposite station with zero fuss or waiting. Train was not so great - cabin was dated, with cold air vents the could not be closed, even by the train staff. We resorted to stuffing with toilet paper to reduce the draught. Train was very noisy and the light in the corridor was left on all night, which made for an uncomfortable night's rest and hardly any sleep. OK for some privacy - although the door to the adjoining cabin doesn't close tightly and you can hear everything - but that's about it. No option of meal either, and which was advertised. Not worth paying double. Would be lower than three stars if it weren't for the great 12go service and the friendly attendant who made up the beds and gave us a wake up call 10 mins before our stop.
★★☆☆☆ Jan 5, 2017 (bus Express, Phuket Travel) :
Uncomfortable, they drive crazy fast, In the middle of the night they blast loud music to wake people up for a 20mins break at a rest area where they offer very poor quality food and disgusting bathrooms.

Although I actually enjoyed 2nd class fan more than 2nd class AC (which I found way too cold) the train was clearly much older than the one I went up to Chiang Mai with. Beds narrower, less comfortable, no toilet paper or tissues at the sinks... just good to be aware that trains can be very different although seemingly similar when you book them!
★☆☆☆☆ Jan 2, 2017 (bus Express, Bus Express) :
Bus was late leaving by 40minutes, arrived over an hour late. Bus was disgustingly dirty, my girlfriend claims to have seen a cockroach, and there were definite signs of droppings/trails(almost looks like black mold), the seat in front of me was broken and would either swing forward or back way to far, thankfully the bus wasnt full and the person was able to move. Would not go with this company again. Also I was told to pick up at counters 25/26 in my online booking, got there they sent me to counter 64, who then sent me to counter 53...very confusing/misleading/unorganized. Bathroom was GROSS!! NO seat cover, just a rusting metal toilet bowl, with a bucket of water and scoop to flush. Bus said it would have AC, it was either broken or non existent. None of the overhead seating personal lights worked allowing my girlfriend to read(one of her favourite pastimes), and to top THAT all off, the bus said express yet it stopped I counted over 20+ times not including the few hours I was able to get an uncomfortable sleep. Just because the driver was doing over 100+km/hr through winding dark roads doesn't mean it's express. As far as I've been taught in life Express means, few but bigger stops. Some times we stopped for no apparent reason or to pick up packages? Not even people sometimes. Like what!?! That's not what I paid for...

Ticket office was great service and the train was very well organised including sleeping bedding etc. The only thing was the food on the train. absolutely awful and twice the price it should be. Basically 3 bowls of slop for 210 Bahts. Should have bought snacks and drinks from 7-11.
★★★★☆ Jan 1, 2017 (train #85 Class II Sleeper Fan, Thai Railways) :
You get what you pay for here folks. Its hands down the most cost effective method to go clear across the country. Its very noisy, couple stops but staff are indeed great about waking you up before your stops, offering food etc. My one and only complaint is that we bought first class sleepers 8 months in advance. 2 months before our trip, we were downgraded to second class with fan (we were not offered second class with AC which is an option folks). As it turns out, it was still ok and we received a partial refund on our tickets. That said, it raised some red flags as we made friends with some of the people who got first class tickets who bought only 3 months in advance. This means that once this company has your ticket in hand, they start sending out emails to the people who baught far in advance and paid less for the ticket in hopes you'll accept a down grade at which point, your first class ticket is given to the person who paid the most...more profit for them. They use the fact that they have to physically purchas and "confirm" your ticket to their advantage.

12Go claim that the trains were all booked but I got a new ticket from the station with no problem. 12Go would not refund or change the ticket and over charged me. They are a third party company charging above normal prices. Unless you really worry about booking in advance you don't need to use their service. The actual train journey was okay. Quite noisy and bumpy so hard to sleep. The breakfast was cold crap so avoid and bring something to eat yourself. When you alight at the destination it's the usual Thai style mayhem but easy enough to find your connecting bus. Although if you get an early train you may have to wait for the second train so they can fill the bus to the ferry. But it's ok, you can eat at their restaurant and give them more of your money. So I reccomend you do it yourself.... it's part of the adventure

Bangkok to Surat Thani with Class II Sleeper AC. Train no.85. Service of 12go was very good. We first ordered first class, but it was all taken by the time. We were contacted via email in six hours and was given number of similar offers, of which we choose Class II AC sleeper. Departure was a bit late because of ongoing boarding of people, but we were on our final destination on time. The train was clean, definitely no bugs. Train service prepared the beds after departure / dinner. The bunks are comfy and clean, beddings were clean also. Possible to order breakfast in the evening for specific time with wakeup. Food was fresh and price for breakfast was 150 Baths. Rations are quite large. Level of noise depends on other travelers, we have two families with small children and it was ok. Toilets were ok for a train. Lower bunk is really wide, so even a tall person can fit there, if you lie diagonaly (I am 198cm and ok). Upper bunk not so big, but ok for smaller person. Staff was funny, nice and smiling. Be careful not to take anything for "free", you will be billed later. Overall we were very satisfied with the service.

The cabin was also very dirty and there was a big bug in the cabin. There were also lots of people bursting into our cabin trying to sell different foods, most respected a no but others just showed the food in our hands and wanted payment and it took a long time to get them to leave. There were only one powersocket in the cabin that was very inconvenient located at above the door to the cabin. The reading lights didn't work. All of this would have been okay for second class but for first class (and considering the price were almost that of a plane ticket) we were a bit disappointed. The ride however was comfortable and almost on time. The booking through 12Go was very good and there were no problem to collect the tickets.

2 things to know up front: The no. 85 train is an older rickety model with an Asian style squat toilet. Prepare yourself for constant noise of the train and frequent stops throughout the night, this won't be the most restful nights sleep you get but this service is a great price for getting you across country whilst being able to glimpse ordinary life out the window. The onboard staff - esp ladies from restaurant car were v helpful a waking passengers 5 mins ahead of their stop. I'd recommend this for the great price and the unique experience, rather than comfort or speed (cheap commercial flights are in the same kinda price range).

Authorities at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport have declared war on taxi drivers who refuse to use meters or do no not have one fitted in their vehicles. After a recent incident involving a rogue cabbie, an airport spokesperson said only metered taxis are allowed to serve passengers at Thailand’s main international gateway.

The Meteorological Department of Thailand says more rain is expected in the southern regions of the nation this week. The warning covers the Southern peninsula from Chumphon and Suratthani provinces all the way down to the border with Malaysia.

Bangkok’s Grand Palace is set to close for two days next week to enable funerary rites for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej to take place. A government spokesperson noted that the Royal Household had mandated the two-day closure to enable ceremonies to mark 100 days since the king passed away.
