How to get from Phuket to Koh Lanta

It is only 90 km between Phuket and Koh Lanta if measured as a crow flies but travelling overland brings the total distance between the two islands to about 240 km. Phuket, the largest and most popular of the Thai islands, is connected to Koh Lanta by buses, minivans, taxi and ferries. High-speed ferries and bigger express boats are quite popular on this route but can also be unreliable due to weather conditions. Also, highspeed ferries only operate during high seasons, mainly November through to April. During the low season, you have better chances relying on buses, minivans or taxis. Your preferred mode of transport will depend on the time you have, how much you want to spend, and what is available at the time.

From Phuket to Koh Lanta by Ferry

There are several companies that offer ferry services from Phuket to Koh Lanta. Two main piers on Phuket to board a ferry to Koh Lanta are Nam Chier and the Rassada piers.

At the Nam Chier Pier, a Chaokoh Travel Center ferry is scheduled to leave at 11.00am and dock at the Sala Dan Pier in Koh Lanta four and a half hours later if there are no delays along the way. Tickets cost THB 1,000.

From the Rassada Pier, you can board a Satun Pakbara Club speedboat at 8.30am or 12.30pm and alight in Ban Sala Dan, Koh Lanta one and a half hours later.

You can also use the Tigerline Travel high-speed ferry that leaves the pier for Koh Lanta Ban Sala Dan Pier at 9.00am. Whichever means you use, your ticket will cost THB 1,500.

Tigerline Travel, Sea Angel Cruise or Phi Phi Cruiser all offer an option to pick you up at your hotel in Phuket what adds to the cost of an ordinary ferry ticket THB200-THB250. Expect to pay for this combination service with the above mentioned providers THB 1,750, THB 1,400, and THB 1,200 respectively.

Tip: The Sea Angel Cruise ferry makes a stop at Koh Phi Phi and, therefore, arrives later than the rest. Phi Phi island entrance fee is 20THB.

Phi Phi Cruiser also offers an extra ferry that leaves at 12.00pm for the same cost. Soft drinks, water, coffee, tea, and snacks are included in your ticket for the morning trips, not the afternoon trip.

Tigerline travel also offers joint van+ferry tickets from the Phuket Airport to the Saladan Pier and Koh Jum at a cost of THB 1,750.

Whether you are boarding a ferry from the pier or waiting to be picked up from your hotel, ensure that you are there 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

From Phuket to Koh Lanta by Taxi

Travelling from Phuket to Koh Lanta by taxi takes about 5 hours including a short ferry ride on a huge car ferry. Though more expensive, a taxi will get you to Koh Lanta safely and with less discomfort. Phuket Transfer Travel Andaman and Lanta Gardenhill mainly offer taxi services for this route. Lanta Gardenhill transport provides services from Karong, Kata, and Patang to any hotel in Koh Lanta for THB 5,300 and from the Phuket airport for THB 4,500.

Phuket Transfer Travel Andaman offers 3-pax and 9-passenger class taxis. A ticket from any hotel in Phuket to Koh Lanta will cost 5,100 for the comfort class taxi and 5,900 for the 9-passenger taxi. From the Phuket Airport, you’ll pay 4,700 for the comfort class and 5,700 for the 9-passenger taxi that will take you to your hotel of choice in Koh Lanta.

Note: Remember to indicate the terminal you are arriving at when booking for a Phuket Transfer Travel Andaman taxi from the airport. If you are using the domestic passengers terminal, make your way to exit gate NO.1 and exit gate NO.3 if you are using the international passengers terminal.

Up to 120 Minutes of free waiting time is included for transfers from the airport and 30 minutes of free waiting time for transfers from hotel. After this, an extra THB 300 will be charged for every 30 minutes.

From Phuket to Koh Lanta via Krabi

A more economical way to get from Phuket to Koh Lanta is to travel via Krabi. Buses from Phuket to Krabi depart regularly from Phuket Bus Terminal and take between 3 and 4 hours to arrive and cost under THB200.

Once you arrive in Krabi town, you can then board a minivan from Krabi to Koh Lanta. Bus Cooperative of Krabi minivans leave from the Krabi Bus Terminal and arrive in Koh Lanta three hours later. Minivan tickets only go for THB 360.

Tip: When using van service, you may want to consider paying for an extra seat on the van if you have huge luggage. This is because most vans only have limited space and there have been cases where passengers with large bags have missed their trips.

Very bumpy but quick journey. Probally not suitable for elderly people or very young children.

Only issues were the fact with the stop at phi phi they overloaded the boat which meant there was not enough seats for the amount of people. Also they turned up 45 minutes late

Was nervous after some bad reviews online but it was fine. The transfer from our hotel was on-time and very smooth. Check in at the pier was a bit busy but okay. There were enough seats for everyone and life jackets (but no safety information etc). It was quite bumpy and we did get sprayed a few times but more just uncomfortable towards the end rather than scary! I would not recommend for infants/babies or anyone very scared of the water. My husband enjoyed the trip and said it felt like a rollercoaster, so take that as you will. My suitcase got pretty banged up in the journey so that was a shame, but otherwise it was okay.

Pick up from hotel very on time, the driver pointed us to the ticket desk at the pier to check in, no information from that staff whatsoever but we got to the boat fine, the ride went well, we had to change boat in the middle of a bay near Riley and get on a similar one to Koh Lanta but despite this we arrived precisely on time on the island. Bags were handled by the staff in between boats and disembarked by them using a slide. Very good value for money as other trips cost the same without the taxi transfer from the hotel

We booked this trip with a pickup from Phuket Airport. We got to the airport much earlier than the pickup time and then we realised.. it’s a HUGE airport, and there were no details whatsoever about where the pickup would be. After an hour being pointed to different locations by different airport staff members and your operators (who were very kind and really tried to help!), and three calls (one of which wasn’t picked up), we finally got to the right place - gate one at the domestic flights section of the airport. We were almost 30 minutes late at this point, but luckily the driver was still waiting for us. I couldn’t thank him enough for this! That’s basically the only reason I don’t give this a lower score. Besides this incredibly stressful event, everything else went smoothly.

Easy booking on 12goAsia and quick response via the “call online” if you need a representative to help update your trip. We had realized after paying that the wrong date was selected for our ferry and we were able to call via computer to have it changed within a few minutes.

The boat didn’t have enough seats for everyone so two girls had to sit on the floor. The guy in charge was yelling at them as well, it wasn’t pleasant.
JA
ferry Speedboat, Tigerline Travel, Feb 2, 2020
The ferry operator left on time, and somehow got us to our destination on time considering the heavy, although not dangerous wave conditions. Although the sea was rough, the captain was an expert navigating through the waves. Please be advised, the trip is bumpy when the sea is calm considering that you are riding in a speedboat. When the sea is rough, please bring motion sickness pills and try to have a strong stomach. If not, bring a barf bag or consider taking the longer ferry ride.

Fast service, spacious area up top to watch the journey go by, Aircon seating downstairs, my only wish is perhaps they had a few snacks for sale other than that, friendly crew and efficient

False advertisement, there was no such steward or any snacks during the trip. The trip itself was quite funny in the beginning. You'll get used to the jumping and rattling quickly and then it's just a fast transfer

They lie. I clearly booked a trip Phuket to Koh Lanta nonstop. 1.5 hours duration. Stopped in Koh Phi Phi, off-loaded luggage and picked up an additional 12 passengers, which were more passengers than seats, and some sat on the floor and back ledge. It overloaded the boat and was not safe. They aldi strangely asked us to put on life jackets during our stop in Koh Phi Phi for a photo - seriously sketchy. I was not happy with this service. Try Bundhaya maybe instead. Don't pay for this company to get more money.

the boat was supposed to arrive at 12:15... we were at 13:10 at Koh Lanta. The boat left as scheduled at 1100 from phuket. The driver was supposed to pick us up at 900 from a hotel in phuket town. He arrived at 9:40. When i saw his instructions it said: pick up time 1000.

ferry Speedboat, Satun Pakbara Speed Boat Club, Dec 16, 2019
Fast, but crowded and bumpy. Large bags are stored in the bow of the boat, exposed to elements. It rained on the trip over, so we felt moisture in the seating area. It was all bearable, so I'm writing this so others know what to expect. Pay attention at pier in Phuket. Departures are not announced on the PA as far as we could tell. So watch what is going on at your departure gate.

It was a nice trip, a little bumpy though. Do not forget to take a pill if you get seasick easily.
MR
ferry Speedboat, Satun Pakbara Speed Boat Club, Dec 1, 2019
Yes it’s fast, but if it’s windy out just know you will get completely soaked. Make sure your smaller bags (the ones they don’t load up in the front) are water proof. We went across on a rough water day, everyone got soaking wet, smaller bags brought into the seating area were soaked, some people threw up, not good for people with back issues or who are prone to whiplash. It was very bumpy and jarring the majority of the way. Be warned.

Pick up was good, taxi arrived early at our hotel (private car) and we got to the pier way ahead of time. The signage at the pier was confusing- told to wait at the 'Anda Varee' stand that was closed. After 20-30 min the employees finally arrived and place a "Satun Pakbara" sign on top. The boat ride was to Koh Phi Phi was great but at that stop, way too many passengers got on and it was packed. I was squeezed into a corner and luggage was packed at my feet, had no room to move.

We had a great trip, although the speedboat left the dock later than scheduled due to foreign tourist who went to the wrong place first. So we all sat inside boat sweating from heat waiting for one late passenger. Remember, this is Thailand! We arrived safely.

Driver was slightly delayed due to festival traffic, but we made it to the pier with time to spare before leaving on a speedboat. I would highly recommend booking the speedboat if you’re wanting a quick journey to koh Lanta.

Was chaos but was prepared. Stayed at top reading and sunning and enjoying the trip. Lots of tourists got sick they went down below. Couldn’t handle the top. Nice 2 hour ride. Once we got close I was prepared for the boat switch which I notice on reviews a lot of other blokes never are. Pshh. I use blokes as a joke. I’m Canadian I don’t use that word. Anyways. Went down and jostled for a spot that was able to grab our bags. Bunch of blokes try pushing you hold your ground. Anyways. We dock. My wife and I grab our stuff and make it easily to the next boat. We stay at the top which has nice cushioned seating. Able to put our legs up. Relax. Nap. Man it was the good life. This ferry trip was the Crack. Is that why Irish say. Anyways I’m not Irish. Cheers mates
