Very easy travel from Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai. Everything pretty clear and uncomplicated. Price fair, pretty much same as Book directly at the bus station.

Van was late and that wouldn't be the problem if they just let me know before I had to call them after 40 minutes of wait. Also, we get to stop by the White Temple and I wasn't aware of that, I thought it was direct transport. The confort was satisfactory and I got from point A to the point B. I would recommend the agency just I would suggest them to be a bit open and clear about things.

I do not recommend booking with Aya Services. Firstly, I had to contact 12Go support 3 days before our journey as we had not received confirmation from the company. The following day I received a confirmation email, then 12 hours later I received a call from Aya Services asking if I definitely wanted the booking. On the day of travel, the advice is to wait outside the hotel 50 minutes before collection. I don’t understand why this is necessary, especially when they arrived 10 minutes late, so we ended up waiting outside for an hour. Once all customers were collected, we began the journey but then took an unexpected 20 minute break at a service station 1 hour into the journey. As per the booking, the details stated that we would only be taking a 20 minute break at the White Temple in Chiang Rai, so we assumed this was the break but no, the driver also ended up stopping at the White Temple for ONE HOUR. Considering we were already running late and he was driving like an absolute mad man, speeding and undertaking most of the way, this was unacceptable. All together we were 90 mins late - I would not recommend booking this company.

I unfortunately got stuck in the back seat of the minivan basically in the boot next to the luggage. Im 6ft4 I could not stretch my legs and was in a lot of pain 😂 There are other seats with a lot more room so if you get picked up early get those seats first! We got picked up in a nice car but then dropped at a petrol station for 30 mins where we waited for the minivan. Got to chiang rai after about 5 hours in total since leaving chiang mai. If I was in a better seat it would have been fine I reckon.

We were picked up a few minutes later than advised, but not so late that we were worried about it. There were 2 more pickups after us and then we thought we were on the road to Chiang Rai. After around 30 minutes, we pulled into a service station, where we were asked to get out, supposedly because the air conditioning wasn’t working very well in the original minivan and they were going to switch to another van. While waiting in the heat for over 30 minutes 3 or 4 other vans/cars also deposited their occupants at the same service station. Eventually we were told to get into another minivan, which we quickly realised was very full, including two people sat up front with the driver. We then sat still in the van with no air conditioning working for another 30 minutes while the driver and a driver from another minivan had a long discussion and several attempted phone calls, presumably to their boss. When we did eventually set off, we were a lot more cramped than the original minivan and the aircon was no better. Had expected to arrive in Chiang Rai at around 3pm, but was around 5.30 when we were eventually dropped off. The cost had been double what we would have paid on the bus, and in hindsight I wish we’d caught that instead as the busses usually give you a lot more space.

The bus took us in advance, it's cool but the people on the bus had a different schedule and thought we were late, and we received unfair and inappropriate comments... The driver's driving was too aggressive, making the journey quite unpleasant. Otherwise, we arrived on time and even early.

Is the art scene in Chiang Rai more vibrant than Chiang Mai?

Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai both have rich art scenes, but they differ in scope and influence. Chiang Mai, as a larger city, offers a broader range of galleries, street art, and cultural events, making it a hub for contemporary and traditional Thai art. However, Chiang Rai has a unique artistic identity centered around visionary works like the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), which blend modern and traditional styles. Chiang Rai is also home to renowned artist Chalermchai Kositpipat and his legacy, which attracts art enthusiasts seeking a more focused experience. In summary, Chiang Mai is diverse and dynamic, while Chiang Rai offers a concentrated and distinctive artistic appeal for those seeking something more niche.

Does Chiang Rai use Grab or Uber?

  • Chiang Rai supports Grab, which is widely used for transportation and food delivery services, offering convenience for both locals and tourists.
  • Uber no longer operates in Thailand, as Grab acquired Uber's Southeast Asian operations in 2018.
  • Aside from Grab, traditional transportation options like songthaews (shared trucks) and tuk-tuks remain common, especially for short trips.

In summary, Grab is the go-to app for rides in Chiang Rai, complemented by traditional local transport methods.

Is Chiang Rai a good place to live?

Chiang Rai is considered a peaceful and affordable place to live, ideal for those seeking a slower pace of life. The city features cooler weather compared to other parts of Thailand, especially in winter, and offers easy access to nature, including mountains and rivers.
