Vientiane to Bangkok Destination Reviews

I did not get the sleeper car that I booked (and even though I booked well in advance) and certainly would not have taken the train knowing I'd have to sit in a seat. On top of that, the provider charged almost twice as much as I would have paid booking direct with Thai railways. If not even the service of booking the ticket you wanted is included, I could have done it myself with much less stress and hassle.

The communication was poor. I was never directly told I would be transferred to Thailand by van then take the train from inside Thailand. 12go Asia didn't even clarify that during several email communications. Eventually had to call the provider whereupon I was able to confirm pickup at my hotel. Was picked up, driven to border, directions at border were just pointing in one direction and saying someone else would pick us up on other side. Had to wait about 30 minutes for other person to show up. We had no idea if we were in the right place of when/if someone was actually going to meet us. We were shuttled to an open air train station with about 3 hours to wait for our train.

The family were very kind and helpful and punctual. They picked me up from hotel and covered all other rides to the train station after immigration. It was also nice to travel with a group.

I booked a first-class ticket, but due to overbooking (which seems to happen far too often, why is there always overbooking?), I was placed in second class. In the end, I paid the same price as a second-class ticket, even though the correct fare should have been almost half of what I originally paid. The staff were very responsive and kind, and I truly thank them for that. However, despite being informed of the issue three days before departure, I did not receive a proper refund or any commercial gesture. This was especially disappointing since I had booked my train ticket two weeks in advance specifically to avoid this kind of situation.

Downgrade because of 12go, that book random sleeper place for our familly. A child of 4 years old was placed away from us, alone in a upper sleeper place. Fortunatly, people were nice on the train.

We were late to book our tickets so only managed to get 2nd class seats. The toilets qe very good and the AC worked well. You are provided a blanket too which is a nice touch. Once leaving Vientiane you travel 10 minutes across the friendship bridge and then you get off again to go through immigration. The seats aren't the comfiest and they leave the lights on all night. Id also recommend booking directly through the railway company as the information from 12go did not match the reality of the booking. E.g. according to 12go train arrives in Bankok at 5:30am however its actually scheduled to arrive at 7:30am.

Comfortable train journey into thailand. Train station was quiet and orderly. We did have to pay 10k kip for leaving the country but after some research border officers are allowed to charge for overtime fee. It isnt much money but I dont like supporting corruption. The train was tidy and comfortable with clean bed sheets and bedding provided. Toilets were good too but bring your own toilet paper as it runs out fast. Otherwise a great journey I actually enjoyed!

Best-Rated Companies for this Route

Unlike buses or taxis which have numerous companies offering their services, train service is usually offered by just one major company in each country. As railway service requires a large amount of infrastructure, most railway companies are government-owned and are a part of the national transport system.

One of the best advantages of travelling by train is that railway stations are often conveniently located within or very near major cities and urban areas. Immediately on arrival to their destination, travellers find themselves in close proximity to important facilities like hotels, supermarkets, and hospitals.

If you travel with a lot of bags and luggage, trains are your best option. Luggage weight limits on trains are rather flexible and allow you to carry multiple bags with you.

Special or luxury trains feature sufficient legroom which allows you to stretch your legs and relax. In comfort and space these train seats can be compared to business class airplane seats.

Similar to buses, trains can provide a variety of amenities to make your travel more comfortable and enjoyable. Modern trains have WIFI service, a snack counter and a drinking bar. Onboard toilets can be a life saver for travellers with queasy stomachs.

Lastly, unlike buses and other overland means of transport, trains are very rarely involved in accidents.
