Hanoi to Lao Cai Destination Reviews

SB
We traveled by night train from Hanoi to Sapa and were surprised by the good service and the train itself. The coupe looked great, electricity, blankets and pillows, airconditioning and snacks were available.

We were changed to a different service than the one offered by Chapa, and it was definitely the oldest and least maintained wagon on the whole train. The wagon was noisy (not the track), and you could see the lack of maintenance all over the place. That said, it was quite an experience, though it was impossible to sleep.

Clean cabins but very warm and noisy, made it almost impossible to sleep. I am 192 cm tall, the beds are much shorter.

The organisation was great, the lounge was lovely, and the train was equally lovely a d also very clean. The only downside was that the A/C didn't seem to be working properly, so for the people sleeping in the lower berths felt like they were inside a sauna, couldn't sleep at all unfortunately. Everything else was great, so would definitely give it another go 😊

We had a wonderful experience travelling on the Chapa carriage from Hanoi to Sapa. We enjoyed the scenery and the complimentary drinks and snacks. We all had a good sleep and felt refreshed in the morning to go sight seeing in Sapa.

A bit difficult, uncomfortable, costly and inconvenient for average seniors like me. I would prefer a hotel stay. But a fun, adventurous and exciting trip for most younger travelers, I believe. No paper ticket was given or required. Small charge for morning coffee. No lift or elevator available to access train. Must use stairs with luggage (or perhaps special request special help with luggage transfer to train).

We paid for a VIP cabin which was very nice and came with snacks. However you have little chance of actually sleeping due to the noise of the train. Overall we felt it was too expensive for what you get and got a bus back instead.

Best-Rated Companies for this Route

Unlike buses or taxis which have numerous companies offering their services, train service is usually offered by just one major company in each country. As railway service requires a large amount of infrastructure, most railway companies are government-owned and are a part of the national transport system.

One of the best advantages of travelling by train is that railway stations are often conveniently located within or very near major cities and urban areas. Immediately on arrival to their destination, travellers find themselves in close proximity to important facilities like hotels, supermarkets, and hospitals.

If you travel with a lot of bags and luggage, trains are your best option. Luggage weight limits on trains are rather flexible and allow you to carry multiple bags with you.

Special or luxury trains feature sufficient legroom which allows you to stretch your legs and relax. In comfort and space these train seats can be compared to business class airplane seats.

Similar to buses, trains can provide a variety of amenities to make your travel more comfortable and enjoyable. Modern trains have WIFI service, a snack counter and a drinking bar. Onboard toilets can be a life saver for travellers with queasy stomachs.

Lastly, unlike buses and other overland means of transport, trains are very rarely involved in accidents.
