Siem Reap to Bangkok Destination Reviews

SA
We left Sarah transport office in a minivan and were then dropped off at SRL transport with whom they partner it would seem (already had bad experience with SRL previously). The lady in the SRL office is very rude and shouts a lot. Chaos. We were then put in a Honda SUV. I said I had booked a minibus but she said only 2 of us so we go in this car to the border. There were other passengers and packages picked up and dropped off on the way. My expectation was that we would travel in a minibus the whole way to Bangkok. The driver wanted to stop before the checkpoint initially! On arrival we were given a lanyard/ticket for the Em Samang minibus and met by them after clearing Thai immigration. The journey in the 9-seater minibus was okay and one stop made for a comfort break and to buy food. Consequently we arrived in Bangkok much later than expected. The stars given relate to SRL Transport only.

Lack of communication throughout. All passengers were confused about the process of border crossing and vehicle stop times along the journey. The one stop between the border & Bangkok was very brief leaving minimal time for food and toilet break.

There were no issues traveling from Siem Reap to the Thai border. However, everything after that was terrible. I was made to wait for almost two hours in the waiting area just outside the border. Several vans came during that time, but each time I was told by the staff, "Not this one, wait for the next." I finally got into a van, but instead of going straight to Bangkok, the van stopped at an airport, hotel, hospital, and other locations to drop off various passengers. As a result, although I was supposed to arrive in Bangkok at 3:30 PM, we didn't get there until after 6:30 PM. The person sitting next to me was supposed to get off at the airport. When I saw his reservation details, his expected arrival time at the airport was around 5:00 PM. I couldn’t understand why he was in the same vehicle as me, which was scheduled to arrive in Bangkok at 3:30 PM. Additionally, we were not provided with any water, and there was only one toilet break during the entire journey. The stop was at a gas station, but unfortunately, the shop was closed, so we couldn’t buy anything. I was extremely thirsty and hungry. No water was given when boarding either. There was also no charging port inside the van, so some passengers couldn’t even check where we were. I understand minor delays can happen, but I cannot believe that the arrival time was so clearly misrepresented. It was a terrible experience.

The best coach journey I have had so far travelling SE Asia. The Giant Ibis team were super helpful and friendly. The coach was super comfortable, we were give a snack and coffee when we got on and the lunch after immigration. Would definitely recommend.

Took a very long time. The bus was uncomfortable and not very clean. We arrived 1.5 hours later. After the border control we had to switch busses but they filled up the busses with local people resulting in not everyone being able to come on the second bus.

It took about 9 hrs (advertised 7.5 hrs) for the whole trip. Immigration from both sides have long queues - and if you have big bags/suitcases, you have to carry them via stairs - the escalator (one of em) in thailand border was not functioning at the time. After one hour of clearing immigration - we were unsure where the van is and had to look for them (lucky we found them). Had multiple (5 min) stops along the way and had one last stop to eat about 1.5 hrs from Bangkok. I dont know what that premium support they offered was, but didn't really feel it and it was stressful and hectic after we left Cambodia. Best to book an earlier trip (ours was 6am) maybe to avoid the lines and traffic.

We werent informed where we had to go to after the boarder but they found us again. We waited for 2 1/2 hours to get our Thai visa but that’s not the fault of the company just bring enough water.

Is it nice to live in Bangkok?

Living in Bangkok offers a blend of modern conveniences and traditional culture. Public transportation is efficient, with options like the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway, costing around 16-59 THB ($0.45-$1.65) per ride. Street food is popular and affordable, with meals ranging from 40-100 THB ($1.10-$2.80).

Housing varies widely; a one-bedroom apartment in the city center may cost around 20,000-35,000 THB ($560-$980) per month. While tap water is not recommended for drinking, bottled water is widely available. The city is bustling and can be crowded, so it is essential to be comfortable with the pace and climate.

English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, but learning basic Thai phrases is helpful. Overall, Bangkok is a dynamic place with diverse offerings for residents.

Is Bangkok safe for single men?

Bangkok is generally safe for single men, but as with any large city, it is important to exercise caution. Stick to well-lit, crowded areas, especially at night. Be wary of scams, particularly involving tuk-tuks and overly friendly strangers offering unsolicited help or invites. The city's nightlife is vibrant, but it is wise to keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious with alcohol consumption.

Transportation is reliable; use registered taxis or ride-sharing apps like Grab for safe travel. Tap water is not recommended for drinking; opt for bottled water instead. When dining, street food is popular and generally safe, but choose vendors with high turnover for fresh food. Keep your passport and valuables secure, and consider carrying a photocopy of your passport instead of the original.

Can I enjoy Bangkok without a car?

Yes, it is easy to explore Bangkok without a car. Public transportation is efficient and affordable. The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway cover major areas, with fares ranging from 16 to 59 THB ($0.45 to $1.60).

Taxis are widely available, with a starting fare of 35 THB ($1). Ride-hailing apps like Grab offer convenience. For short distances, try tuk-tuks, but negotiate the fare beforehand.

Boats on the Chao Phraya River provide scenic transport to key attractions, with fares from 15 THB ($0.40). Walking is also feasible in areas like Sukhumvit and Silom. Traffic congestion is common, so allow extra travel time.

Tap water is not recommended for drinking; opt for bottled water instead.

How to get from Siem Reap to Bangkok

There are a lot of private operators offering Siem Reap–Bangkok tickets virtually at every corner in Siem Reap. Sometimes tickets from Siem Reap to Bangkok or Pattaya are sold at as low as USD15. While travelling with these operators you will definitely reach your destination, be aware, though, that your journey may last much longer than expected due to that usual Cambodian perception of ‘good service’. What you will have is likely to be a worn out bus with extremely limited luggage space – actually backpacks and suitcases are piled right in the aisle. Even if nowadays the road between Siem Reap and Poipet boasts quite a decent roadway covering, these buses tend to spend from four to five hours instead of two to reach the border as they call in at a number of souvenir shops and cafes on their way in a hope to wheedle some dollars out of your pockets. No use in arguing, just take it for granted that your journey will be a long one.

Another inconvenient moment is that you have to change the bus at the Thai side after having gone through all the border formalities. If there are enough people for a big bus, you will travel with much more comfort. Sometimes they use a minibus instead which is a bit less pleasant as drivers of minibuses – God knows why – are notorious for their mad speedy driving, so a ride from the border to the capital is not for a faint-hearted. Leg and luggage space is limited in a minibus, too.

There is a direct international bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok operated by Siem Reap Transport Co. It leaves daily at 8am from the office of Nattakan Cambodia Co., Ltd. (22 Sivatha Road). They provide VIP buses which are generally in good condition, but note that there is not too much leg space for a Western traveller. Otherwise buses are quite comfortable, there is a toilet on board and two meals – a small breakfast and lunch – are served during the trip. Do not expect too much from your meals, though – breakfast is a muffin with orange juice or milk, and the lunchbox contains rice with some sort of a curry. International bus tickets from Siem Reap to Bangkok are more expensive than those from Bangkok to Siem Reap and cost THB1149. The main advantage of the international bus is that you do not need to change it at the border which is the case if you book two separate trips – from Siem Reap to Poipet and from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok. Travel time is about eight hours but sometimes the queues at the border crossing both at the Cambodian and Thai sides are endless, so be ready to sweat for a couple hours under the scorching sun. In Bangkok, the international bus arrives to the Northern bus terminal, Morchit, which is located at the northern outskirts of the city. It is linked with the centre of Bangkok by BTS and with both international airports of Bangkok by bus.

As mentioned above, you can opt for two separate trips – from Siem Reap to the border (Poipet) and from the border (Aranyaprathet) to Bangkok. It may take a bit longer than if travelling by the international bus, but you can start from Siem Reap later that the international bus departs. The best way to get to Poipet is by a shared taxi (about USD40 per car). When on the Thai side, take a bus from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok. Aranyaprathet’s bus station is located 6 km from the border, so you will need a tuk-tuk to get there after you have got your permission to enter Thailand. There is also a Rong Klua Market bus station right by the border. Aran bus company offers both express and VIP24 buses from the Aranyaprathet and Rong Klua Market bus stations heading to Bangkok throughout the day. Tickets cost from THB238 to THB254, travel time to Bangkok is from 3½ hours to 5¼ hours. Buses arrive to Morchit, the Northern Bus Terminal.

Tip: Poipet–Aranyaprathet border crossing is open daily from 7am till 10pm, but if you are going to take a bus to Bangkok from Aranyaprathet the same day, note that you have to arrive to the Rong Klua Market bus station by 5pm or to the city bus station by 5.30pm. Otherwise you will have to sleep in Aranyaprathet and continue your journey the next day.
