What attracts most people in Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is known for its excellent scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities, with numerous dive sites featuring coral reefs and diverse marine life. Popular spots include Shark Bay and Chumphon Pinnacle. Besides diving, visitors enjoy hiking trails offering coastal views, such as the John-Suwan Viewpoint. The island also provides relaxed beach experiences at locations like Sairee Beach.

For transportation, motorbike rentals are common, costing around 200-300 THB per day ($6-$9). Dining options range from local Thai eateries to international restaurants, with meals costing approximately 100-300 THB ($3-$9).

For water safety, it is advisable to drink bottled water, as tap water might not be safe for consumption.

Which area is better in Koh Tao?

Sairee Beach is popular for its lively atmosphere, with numerous dive shops, restaurants, and nightlife. It is ideal for those looking to socialize and enjoy a variety of dining options. Prices for meals range from 100 to 300 THB ($3 to $9).

Chalok Baan Kao is quieter, suitable for relaxation and families. It offers scenic views and a more laid-back vibe. Dining here is more limited, with meal prices typically between 150 and 400 THB ($4.50 to $12).

Mae Haad serves as the island's main ferry port and has a blend of amenities, including shops and a few quieter bars. It is a good middle ground if you want convenience without the party scene.

Tap water is not potable, so bottled water is recommended. Both areas have access to beautiful beaches and snorkeling spots, catering to different preferences depending on your travel style.

Is there a lot of walking in Koh Tao?

Koh Tao is a small island, which makes walking a common way to explore its beaches and attractions. Many areas, particularly around Sairee Beach and Mae Haad, are accessible on foot. However, the island's terrain can be hilly and uneven, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

For longer distances or to access more remote spots, renting a scooter or using taxi services is common. Scooter rentals cost around 150-300 THB per day ($4.50-$9). Taxi fares vary, typically starting at 100 THB ($3) for short trips.

While walking is feasible in many areas, consider transportation options for convenience, especially in hot weather or for visiting less accessible locations.

How to get from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

You may find Koh Tao too rustic and too simple after experiencing glamour of Koh Samui’s nightlife venues, expensive spas and fancy boutique hotels, but there is one thing in which no other Thai island can beat Koh Tao. Learn to dive, dive and dive again – that is what you are supposed to do on Koh Tao and that is actually what the majority of the folk you are about to meet on the island really do. A little hidden gem of the lower part of the Gulf, Koh Tao is attracting underwater world lovers with an abundance of easily reachable diving sites (over 30) and very affordable prices on diving lessons (there are more that 50 diving schools on the island), sea safaris and diving trips. Be ready to hear a lot of diving stories of personal success and failure every evening in every tiny bar, restaurant or guesthouse. Yet for those who are ready to go beyond the stereotypes there are hiking trails, bouldering, sea kayaking, fire-shows, and even jam sessions – all of them on the background of picturesque views and a laid-back island atmosphere. Priceless.

Getting to Koh Tao from Koh Samui

To get to Koh Tao from Samui you have a choice of three ferry companies, namely Lomprayah High Speed Catamaran, Seatran Discovery and Songserm.

Lomprayah takes about 1¾ hr to bring passengers from Koh Samui’s Maenam pier to Koh Tao’s Mae Haad pier. There are two departures a day at 8am and 12.30pm with tickets sold at THB 650.

Seatran Discovery offers similar service but is a bit slower and cheaper: two hours and THB 624. Note that Seatran uses its own pier on Samui, Bangrak Seatran pier. There are three departures a day at 10am, 1pm and 4.30pm.

There is also Songserm boat which is the cheapest one (THB 450). It departs from Samui at 11am and arrives to Koh Tao (also via Koh Phangan) at 2.30.

Tip: As your sea travel between Koh Samui and Koh Tao will last from two to three hours, have all the necessary medications at hand if you are prone to seasickness. When the sea is choppy, opt for Seatran instead of Lomprayah, as the catamaran actually rides the swell, while Seatran cuts through it, which help avoid endless ups and downs.

Getting around

There is no car rental on a relatively small 21 sq. km island. If you consider renting a scooter or a motorcycle, be warned that the roads on the island are dangerous and get their toll of injuries regularly. Renting a vehicle though gives you freedom to explore the island as the ‘official’ taxi fares are sometimes extortionate (especially for going to the eastern coast). For ‘taxi’ you normally have two options: motorbikes or songthaews, which are pick up trucks. There is longtail boat service between certain beaches, which is a good option with reasonable prices.

Where to stay

The western side of the island is much more developed, and the ferries from the mainland and the islands arrive to Mae Haad which is on the western side. Haad Sairee, where the most of the action takes place, is also there. If you are looking for some serenity and tranquillity, consider Chalok Ban Kao. The eastern side is a slow life paradise and a great place to unwind, but you will have to negotiate those treacherous island roads (or greedy taxi drivers) to get to any of the western-side night spots. The busiest seasons on Koh Tao are summer (from July to August) and Christmas & New Year, so book your accommodation beforehand. The cheapest beds sell out quickly. You may fail to find a budget option without prior reservation immediately after Full Moon Parties on the ajacent Ko Phangan, too.

Tip: If you are going to Koh Tao to dive, check with your diving school or operator whether they provide free accommodation (they normally do).

Health issues

There are small clinics in every ‘town’ on the island where they can handle your motorbike scratches and minor health problems. For more serious cases you will have to get transported to the mainland or Samui. Note that dengue fever is a problem, especially in highly packed tourist areas where the virus is transmitted very quickly. Take all the necessary preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites. Well, at least bring a lot of repellent!
...And always remember that you will have to drop out you pre-booked scuba diving course if you happen to scrap your knee in a motorbike accident!

Really bad weather, the boat stopped half way, the waves were so rough the boat felt as if it would capsize. The captain’s were great though

Check in went quick and smooth. No need to print ticket you can show on your phone. Only need to check and weigh luggage if it it larger than carry on size on airplane. If it is you must weigh and check and bring to ferry yourself. Ferry was decent not really comfortable considering the time from Koh Samui to Koh Tao and you make a stop in Koh Phangan as well. The benches are steel and sit up high, if you are petite feet might not touch the floor. Inside cabin has air conditioning but seats are not very comfortable like other ferries. Small market stand on board with nuts/chips/soda. Ferry had many people laying on the floor because size not large enough for everyone to have a seat unfortunately. The captain did a great job navigating even though people kept coming to front of the boat and standing in his way forcing him to honk the horn at them to move. Overall, not a bad 3 hour journey. We all arrived safely.

The boat was slightly delayed in taking off from Koh Samui due to bad weather which worked for us as our flight was delayed and we would’ve missed it! We waited around a while in Ko Pha Ngan for people to board/disembark. Arrived in Koh Tao 45 minutes after expected arrival time. The boat ride from Koh Samui to Ko Pha Ngan was smooth. However from Pha Ngan to Tao was very rocky. Lots of people being sick and holding on. The staff on the boat were great, making sure all passengers were okay and handing out sick bags. Thankfully we didn’t feel sick. Maybe the travel sickness pills worked or sitting in the middle of the boat helped with motion sickness. We sat in the middle left of the boat and us and our luggage got very wet from the waves splashing up. Overall very organised trip and wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be!

Womit Tour - no problem, if you’re sober, you will make it we had good waves, and the so-called catamaran was for jumping on the sea. Service staff everything was excellent. I will say on time. All you have to do is exchange your voucher against a ticket and you’re fine.

Check in und Boarding was quick and easy. Sea was rough that day but the crew offered bags for when you get seasick and they took care of everyone. I can def recommend going to Koh Tao but when you get seasick quickly, consider taking another ferry boat instead of speed boat.
