Gili Islands to Bali Destination Reviews

TP

The boat left and arrived on time. It was comfortable. On Gili Meno you have to pay extra for a small boat because the big boat can't dock at the port. It's cold on the boat, the air conditioning is on very hard. A thicker sweater would be good. Overall, everything was fine.

The two stars are given to the boat and the trip itself. The boat was great and the trip was comfortable. But… The reason for the low stars is the absolute terrible experience we had at the Gili Air ticket office. Long story short: We had tickets, but the day before we received a message on WhatsApp about a cancellation due to weather. We accepted the cancellation and refund. On the departure day, we decided to visit the ticket office to see if the boat was going anyway, as we have experience that this happens. The guy at the office confirmed that the boat was still going, and offered us tickets with a 20% higher price than online. So, we bought the tickets online on the spot. When we showed him our new booking confirmation, the whole atmosphere changed and he started to be very difficult and rude. - At first, he kept talking about our cancelled tickets. We explained several times that these were new tickets, and that we had paid a second time. - Then he started to talk about a «list» and how we where not on his list, because we cancelled yesterday. We kept showing him the new confirmation, explaining that we had paid for new tickets. And, he was willing to sell us tickets just minutes ago, so the list could not be that important. - Then he claimed it was «too late», and that we could not buy tickets «five minutes before». This was at 9.15, and the boat was leaving at 11. He called me a liar to my face three times, but was unable to say what I was supposed to be lying about. I tried to call the boat company on WhatsApp several times, but they did not answer. But when he called them, they answered every time. So I sent the new confirmation by text to the company on WhatsApp, and asked for help. It was not untill we started asking for his name to file a complaint that things started happening. He called the office a couple of times, and then he finally gave us our tickets. The whole thing took about 20 minutes and was extremly uncomfortable. Being called a liar, and being yelled at for about 20 minutes straight, when we have paid for tickets, is completely unaxceptable. Not once did we receive an appology, either from him or from the office. This behaviour is not suitable for a service agent.

The place to get your tickets is hard to find. The name of the campanula is different than on your booking confirmation. The bost is very small and tight. When we go again we choose the big Boat.

Are things cheap in Bali?

Bali offers a range of price points depending on your lifestyle and preferences. Local meals at warungs (small restaurants) cost about 20,000-50,000 IDR ($1.30-$3.20), while dining in mid-range restaurants might range from 150,000-300,000 IDR ($9.60-$19.20) per person. Budget accommodations start around 200,000 IDR ($13) per night, while luxury resorts can exceed 3,000,000 IDR ($192) per night.

Transportation via local buses (bemos) is affordable, costing around 5,000-10,000 IDR ($0.30-$0.65), and renting a scooter for a day costs about 70,000-100,000 IDR ($4.50-$6.40). Taxis and rideshares are more expensive, with fares starting around 30,000 IDR ($1.90). For safe drinking, bottled water is recommended due to concerns about tap water quality.

Do you need a jacket in Bali?

In Bali, a jacket is generally not necessary due to its tropical climate. Temperatures typically range from 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 86°F) throughout the year. However, if you plan to visit higher altitude areas like Ubud or Kintamani, where it can be cooler, a light jacket or sweater might be useful, especially in the evenings.

Additionally, if you're visiting during the rainy season (November to March), a waterproof jacket or poncho could be beneficial for sudden downpours. For most beach and city areas, light, breathable clothing is recommended.

How do you avoid looking like a tourist in Bali?

Blend in with the local culture by dressing modestly, especially when visiting temples; knee-length clothing and covered shoulders are appropriate. Embrace the local greeting, Salam, by pressing your hands together in front of your chest. Use polite phrases in Bahasa Indonesia, such as terima kasih (thank you) and tolong (please).

When dining, choose local warungs over touristy restaurants for a more authentic experience. Ride a scooter to navigate like locals, but ensure you have an international driving permit and wear a helmet.

Respect local customs, such as not pointing with your index finger (use your whole hand instead) and removing shoes before entering homes or temples. Avoid excessive bargaining in markets, as prices are generally reasonable. Bottled water is recommended, as tap water is not safe to drink.
