Koh Samui to Bangkok Destination Reviews

TM
Tomoko M
I had a return trip with TravelBus Asia between Bangkok and Koh Samui, and I strongly would like to recommend TravelBus Asia to everyone. Members of staff at their Khaosan Office as well as bus attendants were very professional and friendly. They spoke very good English, and all announcements were made in English, which I have found traveller-friendly. Before departure, they gave us all detailed information on the bus journey, including when, where and how long we were going to stop for a short break for toilet. Check-in usually starts 1 hour prior to the scheduled departure time, when you depart from their Bangkok Khaosan Office. Complementary tea and coffee are available there. Also, a quick evening meal is included. (If you arrive the office earlier, you can leave your luggage there and walk around Khaosan Road if you want.) When I returned to Bangkok from Koh Samui, our coach arrived at around 4:30am. They kindly allowed me to use their office to wait until the first public transports start in the morning. Again, hot tea and coffee were available there even very early in the morning, and I managed to feel refreshed when I used their washroom to wash my face and brush my teeth after a long night-bus journey. It was a very comfortable round trip, because the coach had a toilet and tea/coffee making facility available on board. Also, a USB port is equipped, so that you are able to charge your SmartPhone during the bus journey. Onboard WiFi worked perfectly, too.

The ferry trip was absolutely fine, staff were helpful and kind, information was clear but asoon as we stepped off the ferry thats where it went downhill, there was no one to tell us where to go, there was 26 people waiting and no one knew what was going on, when we found the point we had to wait at, there was 2 guys that were very rude and abrupt, again told no information we was then driven to another location for 40 minutes not knowing how long it would take when then arrived at the coach to be told we have to pay 200baht per person for extra baggage even though our tickets stated 1 luggage at 30kg and one hand luggage (which is what we had) as well as others there arriving with us and that had already arrived, ill be honest the people he was saying this to all happened to only be white (which may have no significance, was just very apparent it was only white people being charged) which we was then told the company you booked with (12go) gave us your tickets and we now own the ticket and we have our own rules etc, but we wasn't given any information from this new “company” with the baggage times etc. with some back and fourth and him trying to argue with us we made it very apparent (aswell as others) we wasn't going to pay the 200baht which he then tried to tell us that our luggage wouldn't be sent to bangkok with us which obviously we told them it would be sent, we had to make sure we out our cases on first and make sure they stayed on there, we will NEVER use this service again, its disgusting the was they spoke to us, the lack of information and trying to be scammed is unacceptable when booking through a company

The pick up came 45 minutes later than confirmed. We still made it on time though. Bit the minivan was so full that the luggage hardly fit in and one of the passengers wasn’t able to get off her seat anymore since the suitcases were stacked around her. The driver was driving like a maniac (but not really unusual in Thailand). Overall it was okay, we got there on time but don’t expect any comfort. But the rate was really cheap, so we can really complain 🤗.

No instructions on what was to happen. Waiting around without knowing when we were getting picked up. The ferry left 2:30 not 3 as stated. Coach was freezing cold with no way of changing temperatures. You stated one case one hand luggage. 2 ladies got on with lots of bags and cases that were stored by us and kept falling on to us. Worst travel we have done. I called and what’s append your customer service and no reply 😡

The „VIP Bus“ is not what was shown during the booking. There had been 4 seats in a row, not 3 as shown. The bus was very old and dirty. The personnel was rather rude and had minor English skills.

How much do I need to live in Bangkok?

Living in Bangkok can vary significantly based on lifestyle. A basic budget for a single person renting a modest apartment in a non-central area might be around 25,000 THB ($700) per month. This includes rent (approximately 10,000 THB or $280), utilities (2,500 THB or $70), transportation (monthly BTS/MRT pass ~1,200 THB or $34), and food (10,000 THB or $280). Dining out at local eateries costs about 50-100 THB ($1.40-$2.80) per meal, while international restaurants are more expensive.

For a more comfortable lifestyle, including dining at nicer restaurants and occasional entertainment, the budget could rise to around 50,000 THB ($1,400) monthly. Tap water in Bangkok is not recommended for drinking; most residents opt for bottled water.

Is it safe to wear shorts in Bangkok?

Wearing shorts in Bangkok is generally acceptable and common, especially given the hot and humid climate. However, when visiting religious sites such as temples, it is important to dress modestly. This means wearing long pants or skirts and covering shoulders.

In other public places, shorts are fine, but consider lightweight and modest designs to respect local customs. For upscale restaurants or bars, dress codes may require longer pants and closed shoes. Always carry a light jacket or scarf for air-conditioned spaces where temperatures might be cooler.

Is Bangkok a friendly place?

Bangkok is generally considered welcoming to travelers. English is widely understood in tourist areas, making communication easier. Locals are often polite and helpful, especially in hospitality sectors. When visiting temples, dress modestly—covering shoulders and knees is appreciated.

For getting around, the BTS Skytrain and MRT subway are efficient and affordable options, with fares ranging from 16 to 59 THB ($0.50 to $1.60). Tuk-tuks are popular for short rides, though fares should be negotiated beforehand.

Street food is a highlight, offering dishes such as pad thai and som tam at around 30 to 60 THB ($0.80 to $1.70). Tap water is not recommended for drinking; opt for bottled water instead, which is widely available.

Staying aware of personal belongings in crowded areas, like markets and public transport, is advised for a safe experience.
