Train #1005 2nd Class Seat, Sri Lanka Railways, Mar 24, 2020
Reserved 2nd class seats which were easy to find. Comfortable seats with fan in the carriage keeping it cool. Big window to see the view. Excellent train snacks!
Train #1005 2nd Class Seat, Sri Lanka Railways, Mar 20, 2020
Unfortunately, we were forced by COVID-19 restrictions to cancel our train journey. This review is based on the service that we received in purchasing the tickets only. I have scored the vehicle comfort as 4, even though we didn’t take the journey. The Sri Lankan Rail ticketing system makes purchasing advance tickets a bit of a lottery. We were apprehensive as our holiday centred on the train ride. We should not have worried, as the service and information provided by 12Go Asia was great. They answered our questions promptly and provided lots of useful advice. We will come to Sri Lanka next year and will certainly use 12Go Asia.

Bus Local, Browns Tours, Jan 12, 2020
I was the only passanger, so I was taken by car instead of bus. Comfortable car and very nice and safe driver. Took us there much faster then by bus!

We took this train after reading it was one of the most beautiful ones and that was true! The scenery is beautiful!!! The carriage is so pretty inside, outside could use paint as it is not at all as in the photos. On the negative side the train picked us up almost one hour late, and we lost 2 more hours on the way so all in all it took almost double the time (around 6hrs). Just beware not to have flights or anything booked immediately after, just in case.

The Viceroy II carriage interiors were amazing. Breathtaking scenery. Must do! The external facade could do with a lick of paint and the journey would be perfect if a few snacks were served on board besides the tea and coffee.
Train #1015 2nd Class Seat, Sri Lanka Railways, Nov 20, 2019
Service is great and really well organised. I booked over a month in advance, so I wrote them to check what was the status and they answered immediately and very nicely. Got tickets delivered to hotel and received a confirmation message, so that I knew they were there. Rain ride was beautiful and certainly a highlight of our trip :)

I would suggest that you do not waste valuable holiday time travelling to the Colombo office. Difficult to find, heavy traffic and Colombo is not such a nice place. Pay the extra and have the tickets posted to your hotel. This is one of the best train rides you will experience. :)

We went on train 1015 from Kandy to Nanu Oya in first class section and we enjoyed the trip immensely Train left Kandy a little late but the journey was very good and our seats organised by 12go Asia were excellent and on the right side Air conditioning was excellent and we were glad we went first class the Windows don't open but that does not matter really and ensures the carriage is cool

Train #1005 2nd Class Seat, Sri Lanka Railways, Aug 17, 2019
We reserved tickets 1 month before depature. Because of our landing time we couldnt pick up the tickets at the Office in Colombo. After getting in touch trough email the tickets were delivered to our hotel. Superb service. We had some nice seats in the reserved cabin. The non reserved cabins were so full people were hanging outside the train. Lucky us! Thx 12go asia!
Train #1005 2nd Class Seat, Sri Lanka Railways, Apr 3, 2019
Despite booking tickets 60 days before departure I still missed out on my preferred seats when they were released 30 days before travel dates. However, by paying some more I was able to get 1st class tickets, and by paying another US$10 they were delivered to my hotel. The correspondence was ok, but I had issues not receiving some emails so it was a bit nerve wracking at times. In the end it all worked out, we were pleased with our seats.

Best-Rated Companies for this Route

Unlike buses or taxis which have numerous companies offering their services, train service is usually offered by just one major company in each country. As railway service requires a large amount of infrastructure, most railway companies are government-owned and are a part of the national transport system.

One of the best advantages of travelling by train is that railway stations are often conveniently located within or very near major cities and urban areas. Immediately on arrival to their destination, travellers find themselves in close proximity to important facilities like hotels, supermarkets, and hospitals.

If you travel with a lot of bags and luggage, trains are your best option. Luggage weight limits on trains are rather flexible and allow you to carry multiple bags with you.

Special or luxury trains feature sufficient legroom which allows you to stretch your legs and relax. In comfort and space these train seats can be compared to business class airplane seats.

Similar to buses, trains can provide a variety of amenities to make your travel more comfortable and enjoyable. Modern trains have WIFI service, a snack counter and a drinking bar. Onboard toilets can be a life saver for travellers with queasy stomachs.

Lastly, unlike buses and other overland means of transport, trains are very rarely involved in accidents.
