Is Sihanoukville safe for females?

Sihanoukville is generally safe for female travelers, but it is wise to exercise caution as you would in any city. Stick to well-lit areas at night and avoid isolated places. Keep personal belongings secure to prevent petty theft. Using reputable transportation services, like registered taxis or ride-sharing apps, is advisable.

Accommodation in central, well-populated areas can enhance safety. If you plan to explore the beaches or local nightlife, consider going in groups or with trusted companions.

Tap water in Sihanoukville is not recommended for drinking; opt for bottled water instead. Being aware of your surroundings and taking standard safety precautions will help ensure a trouble-free visit.

How expensive are taxis in Sihanoukville?

Taxi fares in Sihanoukville typically range from 10,000 to 20,000 KHR ($2.50 to $5) for short distances within the city. For longer trips, such as to the airport or outlying areas, prices can be higher, approximately 40,000 to 60,000 KHR ($10 to $15). Always confirm the fare before starting your journey, as taxis may not have meters. Negotiating the price is common practice.

For a more budget-friendly option, consider using tuk-tuks, which often cost less than taxis. Ridesharing apps like PassApp can also be used to book tuk-tuks and provide an estimated fare upfront.

How much is a hotel in Sihanoukville for a week?

A week's stay in Sihanoukville typically ranges from 350,000 to 1,400,000 KHR ($85 to $340), depending on the type and quality of accommodation. Budget options, such as hostels or guesthouses, may cost around 50,000 KHR ($12) per night, while mid-range hotels are about 140,000 KHR ($35) per night. For more upscale hotels or resorts, expect to pay 280,000 KHR ($70) or more per night. Prices can fluctuate based on the season, location, and amenities offered, so it is advisable to book in advance to secure the best rates.

How to get from Koh Rong to Sihanoukville

Koh Rong is an island 25km off the coast of Cambodia, it is still quite undeveloped yet has some of the top ranking beaches in South East Asia. The perimeter of the island is all beaches that go by different names. The main beach is Koh Touch, but you can go to visit any of them, some are more convenient to get to than others. As there are no through roads on the island, people get around with boats. Getting from the island to Sihanoukville is easy once you have arrived, since it is usually the same process with the same return ticket but in reverse.

From Koh Rong to Sihanoukville by slow boat

Similarly to Sihanoukville–Koh Rong journey you can choose between speedboats and slow boats.

Slow boats depart from the main beaches and the peripheral villages as they are mostly used by locals or to transport goods. These boats take roughly 2-3 hours and are USD5 each way – their price is actually the one and only factor which can make you opt for a slow local boat. They are a cheaper choice, true, if you have the time and probably won’t be as crowded as the speedboat, but you’d better know how to swim because they often break down and usually don’t have enough life jackets to go around.

On the mainland, they will drop you at Sihanoukville Port which is about 10 minutes outside of town.

To get a ticket for a slow boat from Koh Rong to Sihanoukville you have to go to the pier that they depart from or ask your guesthouse.

Note Travel agents usually do not supply tickets for slow boats as they are less popular and run at different times depending on the season (and are cheap, yes).

Usually slow boats make one trip a day, starting in Sihanoukville in the early morning around 8am and returning from the island in the afternoon around 3pm. They might not run every day to the more remote beaches, but if you tell your guesthouse in advance they will book it for you to ensure they come.

From Koh Rong to Sihanoukville by speedboat

The speedboats are much more reliable as they depart 3-4 times a day by each boat company from the main beach of Koh Touch on Koh Rong.

Note There are two piers side by side that have desks for each company, and if you have an open return ticket you will have to go to one of these to reserve your time in advance since some time slots fill up during high season.

The speedboats take from 45 mins to 1 hour to reach Sihanoukville Serendipity Pier, which is right in Sihanoukville town. The speedboat prices are regulated by the government so they are all the same price of USD20 from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong and back.

This price is for a return ticket. The majority of tour agencies in Sihanoukville sell return tickets but in fact you can buy a one-way ticket, too, so check carefully what kind of ticket you buy.

Though in some cases return tickets are slightly cheaper than two one-way tickets, we prefer buying ours one-way – we know quite well that nasty habit of some tickets to disappear from your purse/bag God-knows-when&how.

Anyway, if you have a return ticket, keep it well and reserve the time you want to return when you get off the boat. It is a good idea to reserve your return trip when you arrive because you might not stay near the pier and it saves you from coming back to write your name on the list. You do have to take the same company as you came on and they all have different time schedules so ask in advance and hang on to your ticket.

Here are the timetables for the companies running speedboats from Koh Touch on Koh Rong to Serendipity Pier in Sihanoukville. Times can change and are only for your reference.

Island Ferry – 10.45am, 1.45pm, 4.45pm

Exellent, prompt and luxurious

The boat showed up at 630am so we didn't leave until 645am or so Do not expect a great service, the guys will take you to paint A to point B. The interior is smaller than the other ferry line so it was more cramped. I traveled with them because I had to catch an early bus and that was the only ferry leaving early.

Could not recommend less. Over one hour late. Other boats companies arrived and departed so no problems with weather. Overfilled the ferry no seats left and still letting people in. God forbid anything serious happened no way near enough life jackets. Arrival time stated 10am didn’t arrive until 11:30 and still had to wait for the luggage. Go with a different provider

Picked us up about 20 minutes late, then made so many stops before heading to Sihanoukville. We were supposed to arrive there at 12.30 but got there at about 1.15. Bags were not undercover and it started to rain.

We were in a double bed and the beds were much more spacious than we’ve had before. However, there are single beds on one side of the bus. We left and arrived on time.

They overbooked the boat, so some uf had to change to another boat at the mid-stop. The boat trip was quite dangerous, many people on the boat got sick. They speak little to no english and can not explain anything. Very poor service.

Ferry was around 20 min late and to go in you have to walk on a piece of wood - pretty instable and one lady in front of me really panicked. Price is pretty high for Cambodia but there is no other way to go to the main land, so you have to pay. Remember to change your 12go.asia voucher for a paper ticket at the pier
