honestly for a student it’s quite a pricey train ride, but with aircon and relative silence it was pretty nice. the observation class seems to be equivalent to first class. ample leg room and tray tables equipped. local vendors embark before departure selling snacks and drinks, or are present at the platform. wide side windows for viewing, curtains to draw if too sunny and a large main window at the end. we all rode backwards so there was no cart after us hence providing more views.

The driver was super super sweet and did his best to give us a good experience, which we had most of the time! He mentioned he has been driving since 3am in the morning (this was 3.30pm) and about 2 hours before arrival, suddenly we could see in the mirror he began to close his eyes for a longer period of time. And multiple times - like he was falling to sleep, but kept on ‘waking’ up after 5 seconds or so. It kept on happening for a certain amount of time and we got a bit worried as it was getting darker outside as well and we were the only ones in the car. We felt a need to keep pointing questions his way, to keep him awake basically - but 2 hours left was just too much, and we actually felt really sorry for him while we were so concerned for our own safety. We got really scared to be honest, because the traffic was insane. Thought you should know, as this is really dangerous and we couldn’t help thinking that he mentioned he had to drive back to Kandy for 3 hours drive.. he seemed a bit overworked, told us he only slept 3 hours, so it makes good sense that he is extremely tired at this point of time. We can’t say a bad word about the driver, he was so sweet and really tried to make us feel great!
