Maenam Pier to Chumphon Destination Reviews

The check-in process was fine and the ferry departed on time. The sea was extremely choppy, which made the journey very uncomfortable, but obviously the sea conditions were outside the ferry company’s control and of course I don’t hold them responsible for that. What did concern me was the location of the toilets. They were accessed from an outside area of the boat, and in such rough conditions getting to them felt genuinely unsafe. The boat was swaying heavily and it was far too easy for someone to lose their footing in this area. I was particularly concerned about the risk of someone falling or potentially going overboard. We eventually arrived in Chumphon more than 90 minutes late. Again, I appreciate that the rough conditions may have caused the delay, but at no point was there an announcement to tell passengers that we were running late or give us an estimated arrival time. This was particularly problematic for passengers like us who had an onward connection in Chumphon. We had no idea how late we were going to be or whether we would make our connections. The luggage handling on arrival was also extremely poor and chaotic. Cases were being pushed and rolled down the pier with very little care, and it looked entirely possible that one could have rolled off the edge into the sea. More concerningly, the luggage was being sent directly into the path of passengers disembarking from the ferry. People were having to dodge cases, move luggage out of their way and navigate through a large crowd at the same time. For those trying to collect their luggage, there was nowhere sensible or safe to stand because we were constantly having to move out of the way of both incoming cases and passengers leaving the boat. The whole system needs to be reconsidered, as I believe the way it was managed was unsafe for passengers as well as risking damage or loss of luggage. Overall, check-in and departure were perfectly fine, and I don’t blame the company for the rough sea or the resulting uncomfortable journey. My concerns are specifically about the lack of safe toilet access during rough conditions, the complete lack of communication about the significant delay and expected arrival time, and the unsafe and chaotic handling of luggage when we arrived in Chumphon.

Even though the ferry was late I still enjoyed the ride and making use of the VIP area which is a must for solo or couples traveling.

We took the ferry from Koh Samui to Chumphon and then took the bus to the train station. Everything worked great, we could use the pdf when we checked in and then we received a real ticket.
