We traveled with our bicycles and contacted Chan Tours right after booking to ask if taking them along was possible. We never received a reply, so we arrived early on departure day to clarify everything in person. We were told that transporting the bikes was possible for an extra fee. We had expected a charge of around 60–130 THB, as commonly mentioned online. However, we were given a “quotation” of 1,400 THB – the same price as our two tickets combined. We tried to negotiate, as this seemed extremely overpriced. The staff claimed that our bicycles would block two seats and therefore reduce the number of passengers. Otherwise, our tickets would be cancelled. In the end, we managed to negotiate the fee down to 1,000 THB, partly because we tried to be understanding. When the bus arrived, the bicycles were simply loaded into the luggage compartment like normal baggage. At that point, the high extra fee was no longer justified. We were told that “this is how it always works,” which we find hard to believe. Apart from this issue, the bus itself was comfortable. The seats reclined well, and we received a small blanket, water, and a snack.

I did this rail trip from near Laos Khong Kate) to Bangkok during the day instead of a night train. It was a very atmospheric trip. The train is old, the windows are lowered to get cooler air in, people sit in compartments for four people, looking out to the changing landscape, it is so lovely experience that country this way.

The experience far exceeded expectations: spacious and comfortable seats, air-conditioning, and attentive service from a hostess who provided bottled water, snacks, a hot meal of rice with Thai pork stir-fry, followed later by milk and a refreshing cold face towel. The level of service from Nakhonchaiair Bus was truly impressive.
