Travel Mart

Company Information

Travel Mart is a purely tourist bus company targeting at the foreign visitors. It runs buses around a variety of the touristiest destinations in Thailand as well as international routes to neighbouring Cambodia. As journeys are long most buses are large and have ample legroom and reclining seats so that passengers can sleep. That said, on some of the shorter domestic routes minivans are used instead of larger Express buses.

If you take the Express Bus option to Cambodia or a longer route within Cambodia you can expect Wi-Fi, food and drinks, and a blanket.

Most buses depart from Khao San Road which is a popular backpacker hub in Bangkok which means that passengers do not have to make their way to one of Bangkok’s bus stations which are often crowded and confusing to navigate.

Routes served by Travel Mart

Travel Mart has a range of routes both in Thailand and to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Here are some of the most popular and useful routes.

Bangkok–Siem Reap

Leaving from Khao San Road in Bangkok, Travel Mart buses deliver you to Siem Reap, the gateway to the temples of Angkor. Tickets on this service cost between THB800 and THB1000 depending on the schedule you choose. The journey takes 8 hours and buses leave at 1 am or 9 am.

Bangkok–Koh Samet

One of the most useful domestic routes served by Travel Mart is to Koh Samet, a small island in the upper part of the Gulf. The island is the favourite quick escape to the sea fro Bangkokians, so minivans fill quickly.

Bangkok to Koh Samet route is sold as a combo ticket with ferry service included. Travel from Bangkok to Koh Samet is by minivan or not one of the larger Express buses. Departures take place from Khao San daily and leave at 8 am. The journey takes 5 hours. Tickets cost THB500.

Pros

Tickets sold on this service, particularly for international travel to Cambodia are far cheaper than flying.

International buses to Cambodia are spacious and have reclining seats.

Pick up is in Khao San Road rather than a central bus station which many travelers find easier.

If you are travelling to Cambodia then the bus staff can help you with the border crossing although you will usually have to pay an administration fee on top of the cost of the visa.

Express buses have food, snacks, and water provided as well as a steward to help with any issues you may have.

Cons

Buses on shorter routes are minivans rather than Express buses and can be crowded and feel cramped.

Buses don’t run to a wide variety of international destinations so unless you are going to travel to Siem Reap you will need to choose a different company.

Minivans may not have working air conditioning and do not have toilets.

Keep in mind

Try to make sure you arrive on time in line with the stated departure time. Passengers who are late may miss the bus and have to wait for another one and lose their ticket. Pick up is in Khao San Road but make sure you leave time to find the correct location.

If you are travelling on a route within Thailand make sure to check whether the company uses an Express Bus or a minivan so that you can plan accordingly.

Travellers reviews

There have been frequent reports of buses being late to depart. As delays are frequent you will need to leave ample time at your destination if you are planning to continue your journey.

Passengers have said that staff may help with visas at the Cambodian border but that they charge a USD10 administration fee for this. If you do not want to pay this fee then you will need to queue and process the visa yourself.

Buses are advertised as having Wi-Fi on board although there have been reports that this often doesn’t work. As such don’t rely on having Wi-Fi on board as this may not be the case.

van Regional 14pax, Travel Mart, Nov 15, 2019
I had a very difficult time finding where to meet the van. The paper ticket gave an address to the travel mart but it led to McDonald’s. Thankfully the man inside McDonald’s called the driver for us and we were able to make the van last minute. Awful driver and trip in general. Driver seemed in a bad mood and wanted to put my seat back. Instead of asking me to do so he steps over me and accidentally hits me in the head. No apologies and continues to angrily pull the lever down and push my seat back. The entire drive is uncomfortable and the driver took multiple smoke breaks where we were sitting in the van waiting for him on the side of the road. Driver can’t understand any English and was unkind the entire drive. I will not be booking travel mart again.

They gave us a free ride from Siem Reap Travel Mart to our hotel. Khao San Travel Mart manager is very helpful and kind.

the overall trip was good and the process at the border was okay too. They had a free tuk-tuk service to bring you to the accomodation from the bus station. My tuk-tuk driver tried to sell me an Angkor Wat tour and really insisted on me. When I finally said no he got very mad at me.

Excellent great staff no problems . Could have a little more food on board and the stop at the garage had a terrible junk food shop. Otherwise really good service

Really helpful guys from the company would come on the bus to help us and make the border crossing very easy. Just being a bit late stops it being five stars

Everything worked well, from pick up till drop off. Staff very nice. Boarder crossing went also well, without any problem. There is wifi on the bus while in Thailand and also you can charge your phone. One break on the route if I am not counting the border crossing. We got water and small cookie. I recommend

The car was not clearly marked and did not stand at the point named in the confirmation. A guy on a bike came to us and brought us to the car.

Having read many other reviews I was a bit nervous about the border crossing, however it was not problematic at all. I didn't witness any of the scams that many other reviews mention. We had an e-Visa and the process was very straightforward, theres a guide from the bus company who tells you exactly where to go who was a massive help otherwise we may have ended up in the wrong queue. My only negative comment was we weren't told to fill out an arrival card until we arrived at the counter which added an extra 10 mins as we had to fill one out and get back in the queue. The stop off point wasnt the best in terms of facilities, would be nice if they sold snacks in addition to the hot buffet food.

Le bus etait confortable. Ils nous ont bien expliqué le passage de la frontière, nous pouvions le faire nous même ou payer 10 dollars de plus pour qu'ils fassent le visa pour nous.

The bus was very nice, the staff was very helpfull and with evisa for Cambodja the boarder was No problem at all. Always very helpfull staff and not at all a feeling of wanting my money. The Missing 5 star is because of the dropoff place. Ok, if the Busses are'nt allowed to enter the city, but the tuk tuk's are so eager to sell trips to you that they talk instead of drive. We took the night bus and our driver kept talking for 15 minutes at the station before we drive off. We had said many times that we were tired and would not make a decision right now so he agreed to come back to our hotel at 6 pm to talk about a trip. After many reviews talking about tuk tuk scam we could se signs that we were about to be in one, so we choose to book trip from our hotel instead and the driver went Crazy mad when we told him. He kept saying he had to support his family and when we still said no he called us idiots and throw the 3 USD back at us and stormed away calling os nasty things. - i Guess he did'nt need the 3 USD to support his family. So buss was fine. Tuk tuk is a scam.

They ask people to arrive an hour before hand but turn up later than that. They could reduce the waiting time. However they were very good with their instructions and explanations and the bus was comfortable

Great trip. Only one drawback was that we were given seats 1 and 2 only to find that the first people on the bus were told to sit anywhere. These two then proceeded to look at their phones for the whole 8 hour trip!! If you give seat numbers at least make sure that people sit in them.

Read mixed reviews here and it is very useful. we were very satisfied with the trip. The staff explained everything clearly and WiFi worked nicely. Had an issue with the bus but travel mart solved this well and we changed bus within 5-10 mins. At the border good explanation and we were happy to pay 5-6 dollars extra to avoid standing in the queue and instead sit on the bus. The only thing confusing was the arrival station. We hired a tuk-tuk there which we also used as a driver for our Angkor Wat day trip.

Everything was going, 3 changes that inconvenienced me; 1, meeting place at McDonalds, NO, we had to walk to the Park. 2, arrival was supposed to be at 5:00pm, I informed my hotel that. We arrived somewhere 6:45pm maybe. Hotel made a pick-up at 5:00pm, I was nowhere. I called, I was the last passenger still at the bus station waiting for my hotel pick-up due to your changes. Bus station arrival was Siem Reap Bus station, changed to Western Bus station. 3. This is my first time in Cambodia. After approval, I did not know where to go, bus was nowhere, representative was nowhere, only for me to find out, bus is still back there, I was lost for a moment.

Bus is in good condition. People are friendly. Wifi works. Got some free water and a snack. One negative point which is that the drop off point in Siem Reap is not in the Siem Reap city centre, but 15 minutes away at Western Bus Station. They say that busses aren't allowed inside the city anymore and that could be the reason, but change this on your website please. Arriving at Western Bus Station this problem got solved quickly and easily: there were TukTuks waiting to get you into the city for a fixed price. However: this costed an extra 3 dollars.

Trip went fine. Picked up at Khaosan which sucks but it's Khaosan so you know what you're getting into with that. Stopped at the border, had to pay $10 extra cuz I had no visa pictures so total for getting into Cambodia was $40. Pretty tame as far as borders are concerned. Guide was very helpful, and friendly. Poi Pet (border crossing town) was a bit of a mess, but that's what you get with rural border crossings. Trip ended in Siem Reap, took a VIP minibus to Phnom Penh (a bit sketch with the driving, but driving here is nuts anyway.) Only complaint was that I couldn't charge my phone at all but that's whatever.

Bus personnel was on-time and was able to explain everything prior to start of trip. They provided snack, water and blanket (which smells liked already used by previous passengers). Bus personnel however left with the other passengers going to the Poipet border while we wait for the remaining passengers who didn’t know where to go next

The bus ride was ok, the seats were comfortable and we could sit wherever we want. The instructions weren't very detailed after the Bangkok immigration, so we got lost a little bit and had to ask the locals where to go. A friendly advice for the budget travellers, after getting off the bus don't accept the offers or tours from tuktuk drivers no matter how nice and friendly they sound. They will just rip you off, know that there are cheaper options in town.
