Thai banks give ATM users an early Xmas present

Thai banks have started celebrating the Christmas festive season early by offering customers fee free ATM cash withdrawals. Customers making withdrawals from their own banks’ ATMs in other provinces will not be charged the standard THB15 service fee.

The 15 Thai ATM pool banks began waiving the transaction fees yesterday and will not start adding them again until the 4 January 2015. Thai Bankers' Association boss Predee Daochai said the measure was designed to help the tens of thousands of travellers heading in to Bangkok to offer their respects to late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The THB15 service charge is only applied when bank customers use their ATM cards at machines outside the province where their bank is located. No fees are applicable for in-province withdrawals.

The Bankers' Association has not stated so far whether fees will be applied when customers withdraw cash from another bank’s ATM. The THB200 international tourists pay when making withdrawals from their home bank accounts is not exempt and will still be applied.

All Thai transport options are busy at present with travellers heading in and out of Bangkok. Key routes from Bangkok to popular destinations such as Koh Samui, Phuket and Chiang Mai will only get busier in the run up to the Christmas holidays. 12GO ASIA says it is better to buy your tickets now to avoid having to waste time waiting for an available seat.
