It was a very local way of traveling. Definitely a memorable experience. Although fair warning- just to be mentally prepared, timing ranges and mine, for example, took 14 hours, not 10. Two hours at border/customs alone. (Although we found out there was a holiday- so that may be why) despite how long everything took, it was organized. Two vans and one ferry ride. Tight space- be aware- I got lucky and sat at door seat. Everything taken care of for me. Picked up others here and there. If taking 5am bus from komtar- no need to come 30minute early. Come 10minute early. Will be enough.

In my ticket was a wrong location (wrong coordinates), I harfly found the place. It was said - come 30 minutes earlier (good advice, but in 4.30 am), I came and had waited for 30 minutes. In the ticket it was sais that I will arrive on Koh Samui at 2 pm, but actually I was there at 18.40. And I don't know if it's a good thing or not, but in Hat Yai I had to change the van to the bus (which is slower, but little bit more comfortable). I prefer I knew it in advance. But thanks anyway for such a cheap transfer. This covers some minuses for me

Driver 45 min. To late in the morning 5am. From Penang to hat yai minibus uncomfortable. From hatyai to Samui quite ok. No Stop and time for foot and drink. But better at all since for 10 or 20 years ago. Booking B normak agency office is better. You don't must confirm

The place to board the bus was not easy to find. On the voucher there is a tiny map and the coordinates and a picture of a van (bus). The picture of the van is not useful at all, much better would be a picture of the travel agent where you have to go to. Had to change busses after the border, which was a bit confusing but OK. Did need a printout of the voucher, even though it said just to have it on your mobile was sufficient. Fee at the border was supposed to be MR 5, but we had to pay MR 7. And quite frankly, I can fill in a landing card myself, without having to pay. Thai side, after switching bus, was a bit better. Confusing was, however, that we had to go onto the ferry, with our luggage still in the bus and the bus did not arrive with the same ferry, but the next one. Whole trip took 12, rather than 10 hours, even though both drivers drove aggressively and probably often over the speed limit. All together: arrived safely, but the experience could have been better.
