Koh Tao nabs top spot in TripAdvisor island awards

The recent release of TripAdvisor’s annual awards elevated Koh Tao to the top island in Asia spot. For Traveller’s Choice 2015, the Thai island snapped up the top award for Asia and also the number five spot in the global table of best islands.

The US-based travel website garners travellers' reviews and recommendations to compile the annual awards. The awards cover the whole spectrum of holiday and travel related categories and about 100 global islands made the grade this year.

The Gulf of Thailand island and perennially popular dive location beat four other Thai offshore islands in the Asian region. Phuket came in third and was followed by Koh Samui in fourth place. Koh Lanta and Koh Phangan came in sixth and seventh respectively.

Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are Koh Tao’s sister islands in the gulf. Phuket and Koh Lanta are Andaman Sea islands and across the other side of the southern Thai peninsula. All of the islands are accessible from the mainland and are served by lots of ferries.

In the case of Koh Samui and Phuket, on-island airports provide direct routes in. Phuket is also linked by bridge from Phang Nga Province and has buses from many cities in the south as well as the capital city of Bangkok
