Thailand to Celebrate Loy Krathong Festival on November 11

Thailand is preparing for one of the most colourful festivals of the year – Loy Krathong. This time, it falls on November, 11. Here are the best ideas on where to celebrate Loy Krathong in Thailand.

Loy Krathong will be celebrated across the country so whenever you find yourself on the evening on November, 11, head to the nearest body of water – be it a lake, a river or the sea – there sure to be some kind of festive activity. Yet there are some destinations that celebrate Loy Krathong in a unique way.

The legend says that the festival originates from Sukhothai – the impressive Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, forms a very special setting for festive activities. The festival in Sukhothai will take place between November 2–12.

Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai is one of the most impressive in the whole country. Called 'Yi Peng', it is dedicated to Lanna culture and traditions.

The ancient capital of Siam, Ayutthaya, invites guests to take part in krathong making activities and competitions and to celebrate the festival in the magnificent Ayutthaya Historical Park.

Samut Songrhram, near Bangkok, offers to enjoy the festival in a second-tier city in the frame of TAT's program of promoting tourism in minor destinations. It will also feature floating krathings, krathong-making activities and a fair.

Tak Loy Krathong Sai Festival is famous for its unusual krathongs made from coconut shells as well as folk art and cultural performances.
