Songkran 2018 to Be Widely Celebrated All Over Thailand

As usually, Bangkok will host great celebration in Bangkok. Besides, 12 other places including very popular tourist destinations – Ayutthaya, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and others with different dates starting today and continuing till 20 April – will hold magnificent celebrations.

Five new destinations will be added this year with their unique traditions – Sing Buri, Chanthaburi, Kamphaeng Phet, Kalasin and Nakhon Si Thammarat where the events are to be held from 11 to 17 April.

Songkran in Thailand is the time of the reunion of the families when they meet together to participate in the ancient traditions washing away the sins with scented water splashing. The ritual is held in local temples and consists in pouring the scented water on sacred Buddha images. Buddhist statues are cleaned with the water which signifies spiritual purification. This water is collected and is dripped over the hands of the elder members of the family for luck. Tourists and local travellers are expected to spend up to 19.8 billion Baht which will considerably exceed last year’s amount.
