Bangkok Grand Palace to close again for two days

Bangkok’s Grand Palace is set to close for two days next week to enable funerary rites for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej to take place. A government spokesperson noted that the Royal Household had mandated the two-day closure to enable ceremonies to mark 100 days since the king passed away.

Prime-minister’s office representative Ormsin Chivapruck explained the palace would be closed on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 January and would reopen to the general public on the Sunday. He added that the adjacent Sanam Luang Park would also be off-limits while the 100-day ceremony took place.

King Bhumibol passed away on 13 October 2016 and two months prior to his 89th birthday. The king’s reign was more than 70 years long. During his long tenure, he won the hearts of the Thai people and after his death the government declared a one-year period of national mourning.

A tour of the Grand Palace is one of the most popular activities for tourists in Bangkok. The capital is also the nation’s principal air gateway and transportation hub. 12GO ASIA offers tickets to and from Bangkok. Locations include Yangon, Ho Chi Minh City, Chiang Mai and Phuket.
