Airports of Thailand says record numbers of passengers due at New Year

The Airports of Thailand authority says it is expecting record numbers of passenger arrivals and departures over the New Year holidays. AoT president, Nitinai Sirismatthakarn noted that current estimates showed the six airports under its jurisdiction would handle 2.7 million passengers between today and 4 January 2017.

He said the airports would be busy and passengers departing on flights should allow themselves plenty of time to check in and pass through security and immigration checkpoints. Arriving passengers are also expected to face delays due to the sheer volume of people and congestion at baggage carousels.

The AoT reported that aircraft movements would be almost 10 per cent up on the same week last year and would average 2,400 a day. Suvarnabhumi Airport, the principle air gateway to Bangkok and Thailand, will handle the lion’s share of the flights with around 1,000 per day.

Nearby, budget-airline hub Don Mueang will not be much less busier with an expected 700-plus flights a day. 12GO ASIA advises passengers holding tickets for flights from Don Mueang to locations such as Chiang Mai, Phuket, Phnom Penh and Hanoi to get here early.
