Hoi An welcomes tourists to historic Hainam meeting hall

Authorities in Vietnam’s best known cultural hub, Hoi An, have opened another historic building for tourists to visit. Hainam is an 1870s Chinese-style structure utilised as a meeting and prayer venue and one of five similar structures in the environs of Hoi An Old Town.

Hainam has been preserved in its entirety and its designation as a site of interest will ensure future councils preserve it for posterity. Historians say the interior is pretty much the same as it would have been soon after it was built. The image supplied by Oriental Architecture is a pleasing depiction of this.

It has front and rear courtyards, a central chapel and two sub-structures. A colourfully painted altar is the centrepiece of the main chapel and is flanked by shrines devoted to the founder’s forebears and the god of prosperity.

Hainam was erected in memory of 108 Chinese merchants accidentally killed by Nguyen Dynasty soldiers. The soldiers thought the traders were marauding bandits. The other four similar Hoi An structures have already been opened to the public. They are Trieu Chau, Trung Hoa, Phuc Kien and Quang Dong.

The 12GO ASIA travel team says Hoi An is one of the single most popular visitor destinations in Vietnam. As such, we offer a full choice of transport options. Among these are bus and taxi transfers from Da Nang. We also provide reservations services for travel from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Nha Trang.
