Thailand and China contemplate mutual visa waivers for tourists

Thailand and China are in tentative discussions about changing their visa entry policies for tourists. Media sources in Beijing say that if the proposed plan gets the green light it will allow citizens of one country visa free entry to the other.

At present, Chinese people coming to Thailand can get a visa on arrival which costs THB2,000 and is good for a stay of up to 15 days. They also have the option of pre-applying for a visa at the Thai Embassy in Beijing or a Thai consulate in a city such as Kunming or Shanghai. These cost the same in Chinese yuan, but are valid for 60 days.

Thai people travelling to mainland China can apply for visas at the Chinese embassy in Bangkok or consulates in Chiang Mai and Songkhla. The standard visa fee for a four-day turnaround is THB1,000. Those who require same-day issue have to pay an extra THB1,200 for expedited service charges.

Tourists and travel agencies in both China and Thailand say visa-free entry would encourage more travel between the two. Hong Kong and Macau offer visa-free entry for Thai citizens. 12GO ASIA offers ticket reservations services for flights between Bangkok and Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou.
