Bangkok edges out London as top MasterCard global holiday hotspot

Bangkok has overtaken London as the planet’s favourite holiday destination according to the just released MasterCard annual survey. Visitor number projections by the credit card company show that the Thai capital will welcome almost two million more tourists and business travellers in 2016 than London.

The corporation’s Index of Global Destination Cities study shows that Bangkok will likely receive around 21.5 million visitors by year’s end. The 2016 projections for London are 19.88 million. Bangkok also beat another global favourite, Paris, and fast-emerging Dubai to top the rankings.

The head economist at MasterCard explained that Bangkok has long been poised to take pole position as the planet’s most visited holiday location. The economist expounded by saying the city provided excellent value for money and this was especially so for tourists living in high-income nations.

Bangkok is noted for its cheap and delicious street food which is found in every corner of the city. Another plus is a portfolio of accommodation covering everything from basic guesthouses costing a few dollars a night to plush five-star resorts where guests’ every whim is catered for.

Scintillating nightlife and attractions like the huge Chatuchak Weekend Market, the Grand Palace and the Temple of Dawn are added bonuses and ensure Bangkok’s rising star is unlikely to wane any time soon. Even travel has become easier in the past few years as 12GO ASIA has increased its ticketing options for onward travel to popular Thai destinations such as Phuket, Pattaya and Chiang Mai.
