Thai Authorities choose Koh Samui for new cruise port

Thailand’s marine authorities have chosen Koh Samui as the location for a new cruise ship port. The nation’s deputy-transport-minister told reporters the Marine Department had conducted feasibility studies and decided the Gulf of Thailand isle was best suited for the new facility.

Ormsin Chivapruck continued by saying Samui boasted a portfolio of lovely beaches among which were the world-famous Chaweng and Lamai. He expounded by saying a majestic waterfall, natural scenery and ample tourism draws would add to the attractions for cruise-ship passengers on Samui ports-of-call.

Thai tourism officials say around 100,000 cruise ship passengers come to Thailand every year and the number is expected to grow in the future. The original site chosen for the new port was Krabi. Krabi faces Phang Nga Bay on the opposite Andaman Sea side of the Thai peninsula.

An insider close to the Marine Department research team said he thought the researchers felt Krabi did not have enough attractions for cruise ship passengers. The fact nearby Phuket is also a stopover for cruise ships may have also been a contributory reason.
