Thailand embraces use of electric buses and cars

The Thai government endorsed a road map to build and use electric vehicles on Tuesday. A spokesperson told reporters the inner cabinet had given the green light for a proposal to manufacture battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in three sizes.

Kobsak Phutrakul carried on by saying the plan is for Thailand to manufacture electric buses for use in urban zones as well as cars and compact cars. He explained that the use of BEVs around the world had increased and Thailand needed to stay on top of the latest technological advances in eco vehicles.

The development of electric vehicles will be controlled by the ministries of Industry and Finance as well as the Board of Investment. The three will establish criteria relating to the manufacture of BEVs and also standards and tax reductions on imports of them.

The Land Transport Division has been instructed to set a standard kilowatt input for the engines of BEVs and charging points. The government also says that manufacturers interested in producing electric buses and cars should submit their proposals for cabinet approval.
