Travel mag names Chiang Mai as planet’s second best tourism city

Travel and Leisure magazine has named Chiang Mai as the second best city in the world for tourists to visit. The northern Thai city was only pipped for the top spot in the 2016 edition by Charleston in the US state of South Carolina.

For its annual surveys, Travel and Leisure asks respondents to rank cities on features ranging from tourism sights and attractions to culture, hospitality, shopping and cuisine. The magazine explains that urban hubs are rated on the whole package and not just specific attributes.

Charleston topped the table with 91.66 out of a 100 and Chiang Mai scored 91.25. San Miguel de Allende in Mexico came third, The Italian cultural city of Florence was fourth and Laos’s UNESCO listed city of Luang Prabang was fifth.

Other Southeast Asian cities to feature in the top 20 were Siem Reap at number 13 and the Thai capital of Bangkok at number 14. For its annual awards, Travel and Leisure collects readers’ opinions on everything travel related. It covers genres including the best hotels, islands and car rental suppliers.
