Ferries plying routes between the mainland ports at Surathani to the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan were cancelled due to the high waves. The abrupt terminations left passengers waiting around at piers. Local officials put up red flags on the northwest Samui beaches of Bo Phut, Chaweng and Lamai banning swimmers.
Farther south, in Nakhon Si Thammarat, residents of fishing villages along the coastline were forced to evacuate as waves swept ashore and left houses and streets awash with water. Tha Sala is a district 30kms north of Nakhon Si Thammarat Town. It was one of the worst hit areas and 30 homes were abandoned by residents.
Municipal authorities in Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla all issued various reports of flooding and damage to coastal highways. The Thai Meteorological Division said the storms are only expected to last a few days at most.

Heavy storms caused havoc along the lower half of the Gulf of Thailand coastline yesterday. Deluges of rainfall, gale-force winds and waves averaging three meters in height caused the evacuation of some coastal districts and the cancellation of ferries to and from offshore holiday islands.
