Riding the ferry to the Phi Phi islands

The Phi Phi archipelago is situated in the Andaman Sea off the coast of southern Thailand. The islands are an archetypal tropical paradise boasting golden sands lapped by crystalline waters and with lush vegetation providing a verdant crown. Maya Bay and the twin bays of the main island are two of Thailand’s best known sights and a perennial fixture on postcards.

Koh Phi Phi Don is the biggest island in the group and where all the hotels, guest houses, resorts, restaurants and bars are located. This island is halfway between Phuket and Krabi. Ferries from either of these locations take between 90 minutes and two hours to reach Phi Phi Don’s Tonsai Pier.

Rassada Pier on Phuket Island is the chief departure point for ferries to Phi Phi. From Krabi there are several departure points. These are Klong Jirad Pier in Krabi Town, Railay and Ao Nang beaches, and Koh Lanta’s Saladan and Ramad piers.

There are usually between one and two ferries from each departure point a day, although they run less frequently during the May to October rainy season. Speedboats are quicker than regular ferries. Ferries offer a little more comfort with typically a sun deck on top and an air-conditioned passenger cabin below. The cabin features a bar selling drinks and snacks.
