How to get to Koh Phangan

What about

Say "Koh Phangan" and here you are in the middle of the partying crowd, old-school hippies and modern flashpackers, party animals and adventurous party goers from all over the world who come to the island to partake in a once in a lifetime celebration experience. Koh Phangan’s epic Full Moon, Black Moon and other ‘Moon’ parties rock the island creating an overwhelming atmosphere of freedom and happiness. If drinking and partying all night through is not your thing, it does not mean that Koh Phangan is a total no-no for you. A stunning island has much more to offer. When the parties are not raging, the island settles into a sleepy hippie town, perfect for the unconventional traveller who is looking for an organic experience. The terrain of the island is quite mountainous and provides a picturesque backdrop for white sand beaches and infinity pools in mushrooming luxury five star hotels and resorts which are consistently gentrifying the island, slowly transforming it from a budget destination to a Babylonian one.

Getting to Koh Phangan

The departure point for Koh Phangan is Donsak Pier in Suratthani. There are ferries linking Koh Phangan with its neighbours – Koh Samui and Koh Tao – and making island hopping as easy as it can be.

From Bangkok via Chumphon/Suratthani bus + ferry

Buses to Chumphon/Suratthani leave from the Southern bus terminal in Bangkok. They take from 6½ hrs to 12 hrs to arrive. Busses depart regularly during the day, the majority reaching Suratthani between 1am and 5am, so be ready to while away some time before boarding your ferry to the island. There is a convenient bus+ferry option offered by Lomprayah company with buses leaving from their office in Khao San Road in Bangkok which is a good option if you are staying somewhere in the area. The bus brings you directly to the pier in Chumphon from where Lomprayah catamaran delivers you to Koh Phangan via Koh Tao proceeding then to Koh Samui. Book a couple of days in advance. Opposite to all other ill-famed Khao San Road buses, there are no theft-related issues with this service.

From Bangkok via Suratthani train + bus + ferry

You have a wide selection of trains heading down to the south from the capital, offering the full range of coaches, from the cheapest fan seats to the comfy AC 1st class sleepers leaving during the day. There is a very convenient #85 train departing from Hua Lamphong train station in Bangkok at 7.30pm and arriving to Suratthani around 7am. Even the 2nd class sleeper gives you enough privacy with personal curtains; the 1st class sleeper is a more chic choice but costs nearly double.
Do not, thought, disregard the earlier trains as they give you an opportunity to soak up the scenery. Limestone cliffs, farmlands and epic jungles pop up throughout the journey, each more beautiful than the next.
If your book a joint ticket to Koh Phangan (which may work out cheaper than finding your own way), then you will be picked up at the station in Suratthani about one hour after your train arrives and transported directly to Donsak Pier for your 1½ hr journey to Thong Sala Pier on Koh Phangan.
Tip: The lower berths are the first to sell out. Book them as much in advance as possible. They are also considerably wider than the upper ones. If you are travelling with a baby, opt for the lower berths by all means.

From Koh Samui to Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan lies within an easy reach from Koh Samui. Lomprayah and Seatran take sheer 20 minutes to get to the island; there are slower Songserm (30 min.) and Haad Rin Queen (50 min.) ferry boats, too. All the boats – except for Haad Rin Queen – arrive to Thong Sala Pier.

From Koh Tao to Koh Phangan

There are three ferry companies serving this direction with Lomprayah and Seatran offering the fastest service (80 min.). Songserm takes 1hr 50 min. for the route.

How long does my sea journey to Koh Phangan last?

Depending on the company you travel with, your journey to Koh Phangan from the mainland (Donsak Pier in Suratthani) may take from 1½ hr to tiring 6–7hrs.
Lomprayah – 1½ hr (twice a day in either direction)
Raja Ferry – 2½ hrs (four times a day in either direction)
Songserm – 3½ hrs (twice a day in either direction)
Night ferry – from 6 to 7 hrs departing at 10pm daily from Koh Phangan and at 11pm from Suratthani.

Besides Lomprayah (20 min. to Koh Samui, 80 min to Koh Tao, both 4 times a day) and Songserm (30 min. to Koh Samui, 1hr 50 min to Koh Tao, both twice a day), there are two more companies which connect Koh Phangan to Koh Samui and Koh Tao: Seatran (20 min. to Koh Samui, 80 min to Koh Tao, both twice a day) and Haad Rin Queen (50 min. to Koh Samui, 4 times a day).

Getting around

There are a few ways to get around the island which depend on your budget and your desire to explore or immerse yourself in the island experience.

Taxis, or songthaews, are pick-up truck which connect the busiest parts of the island. Depending on your destination they will cost between 100 THB and 200 THB per person. The prices are usually fixed and tend to double after the sunset. They are convenient, but limit your freedom to explore, and cost quite a bit when you add it up. They are however the best and safest option for full moon party goers – you know why.

Motorcycles can be rented from shops all over the island. They are a great way to admire the scenery on the coastal road which boasts awe inspiring views, quaint resorts and pit stops along the way. Fuel is cheap, and normally brought in whiskey bottles from local shops or from brightly coloured coin operated machines. Rental for motorcycles will cost around 150 THB per day and you're generally expected to give up your passport until you return the bike. So take photos and look after it. But above all drive carefully, you will undoubtedly see plenty of tourists walking around with bandages and scrapes, more often than not from motorcycle accidents.

Bicycles can be rented all over the island for about 50 THB a day. As usually, they are a great way to explore the island, but do not underestimate the tropical heat. Follow secret jungle trails or just move about the flatter parts of the island at a leisurely pace. Koh Phangan is very hot though, so keep plenty of drinking water at hand.

Long-tail boats are usually moored at the beaches and are an amazing addition to the island experience. With these you can cruise between the bays taking in rich scenery, including cliff formations which can only be accessed by a boat or by hiking. Besides that, they are probably the quickest way around the island. Prices are negotiated with the boats' owners, and usually works out quite well if you're in a group.

Where to stay

No matter which beach appeals to you most, if you come for the Full Moon Party, do arrive early. It means 4–5 days before the party hits the island; otherwise you risk counting the stars by night – literally. Almost all the guesthouses require the minimum stay of at least three nights, with some places not letting you in for less than a week. There is transportation to Haad Rin, where the Full Moon Parties are held, from all the beaches, so it is not so important where you finally settle down.
Families and those looking for some serenity and peacefulness should try the remote Haad Thong Nai Pan Noi with its elegant resorts which bring an air of Samui to Koh Phangan.
Tip: If you fail to find accommodation on Koh Phangan during the Full Moon period, consider staying on Koh Samui which is the closest option.

Activities

With the diving mecca of Koh Tao within an easy reach, there is no much sense in visiting much more modest diving sites of Koh Phangan. Still there are nice spots for snorkelling in the vicinity, including Koh Ma, and you may also sign up for a hiking and snorkelling adventure in the Ang Thong Marine National Park. Waterfalls and worthy trekking trails await those to venture to the island’s hinterland. Climb the highest island’s pick, a 630m Khao Ra, or hire a kayak and reach some hidden beaches and visit Saturday Walking Street market in Thong Sala (the best time to do so is between 6pm and 8pm) for local souvenirs and cheap tasty food.

Legal issues

If you are going to the Full Moon Party not just to party and drink, but to take drugs as well, remember that drugs are completely illegal in Thailand and punishment is severe. To get inspired, watch Bangkok-Hilton and think twice.

At 12Go our operators offer three types of service:

Cheap, Fast, Good - but you can usually pick only two of them!
Cheap & Fast won’t be Good. (e.g. buses from/to Khao San Road, local buses or 3rd class trains)
Cheap & Good won’t be Fast. (e.g. VIP trains in Thailand)
Fast & Good won’t be Cheap. (e.g. private limousine services, or VIP24 buses vs Express buses)

Make your choice! Please remember that while we are closely monitoring the services, we are still an agency marketplace. That means we focus on ticketing services and route availability & coverage rather than on the factual seat reclining angle you will get on the bus today.

Clean and comfortable. The service is great. Someone comes around to make the beds, so everyone gets a collective sense of when it’s time to sleep. They come round with coffee for 60baht in the morning so you know when it’s time to wake up. Good coffee too! A comfy pillow. Nice blanket. Air con, so not too warm and not too chilly. Take a jumper and some socks though! Oh, and the lights are quiet bright even with curtains closed. I was on upper berth so probably worse up top! Eye mask recommended. There’s a restaurant as well. So don’t get fooled/ripped off by people coming round selling food at a station stop. You might pay over the odds and it might not be good! Would defo do this again. Booking through 12go Asia was also very easy and organised. Made the whole thing hassle free.

No information on what's happening. The bus stopped twice: first time around midnight and second time at 6 in the morning. Nobody told me what's going on. It's not written on the ticket that there is a change of bus. The steward was kind of rude, just woke me up at 6 and kicked me out of the bus in the middle of nowhere. Luckily there was Thai girl in the bus, who could speak English and explained everything to me. Due to AC it was freezing cold in the bus though I wore sweater and had two blankets

Very friendly and helpful staff at office to collect the bus and ferry ticket. We had to wait outside the bus for 20 mins even though the staff was there. So we left 10 mins late but where on time for the ferry. The water was a bit rough at one point and a young girl became quite sea sick. It would be good for them to have proper bags on the boat for such cases. In general everything was clean and well run.

The initial booking promised a bus and ferry, "express", and made it seem like you're just getting on a bus to the pier to take a ferry. We got to the initial point where we waited to take a private car to the BKK bus station where we had to wait some more for our actual bus. We were dropped off at another point where we had to wait some more for a private van to take us to another bus where we finally arrived at the pier and took the ferry which took another 5 hours. Not exactly "express". We were completely thrown off with all the confusing hand offs and wait times in between, especially with all our packs in hand and constantly having to wake up, pick up our stuff then drop it back off again, only to fall asleep to immediately wake up for the next hand off. If we had known that the trip was ACTUALLY this complicated, we would have just paid the extra $$$ to avoid all this. Really disconcerting that what you're presented to buy is not actually what you receive. I would not book with Songserm again.

The dinner was great before departure but that was about it. The big bus was officially broken so we were put it a small van crammed with people and luggage and no bathrooms. Talking to other travellers, I found out hey had actually booked the ‘cheap transfer’ and paid much less. Only part of the travellers were given ferry tickets so I had to sort out my ticket upon arrival at the port and missed the ferry - two hours later I was on the boat finally. Have requested a refund and am waiting for a reply.

Time efficient trip, however we were not told until just before boarding the bus that it would not stop for food, and as we were travelling with children this was a problem. We were forced to go to seven eleven and all that was on offer was junk. There was food at the jetty but were ushered very quickly on to the ferry so there was no time to buy any and again there was only junk available on the ferry! The seats on the bus were uncomfortable, one of ours was broken and did not come fully upright and we were seated downstairs next to the toilet which smelt bad!!! hopefully the return journey is better! The ferry was modern and comfortable, and overall the journey was okay but the bus was disappointing. 12go however was well organised, everything went to plan and the information provided was accurate and excellent

Great service, was pleasantly surprised at the standard of all the transport! The beds on the train were comforable alhtough really bright as the lights are on all night so bring a facemask! I had the top bunk which was fine for me as I'm not too big but he bottom bunks are much more spacious, so opt for that if you have the option, The transfers all went really smoothly, Some people complain about the extra time between train/bus transfer, however it worked in our favour as the train took 45 minutes longer than expected meaning our journey still arrived on time and we had a shorter stopover. The staff at 12go were really helpful. Would definitely recommend.

The meal at the restaurant was fine. Some of the food that was sitting out had a very foul odor to it which was concerning. But the main reason I give this 3 stars is that we had to take the ferry to Koh Samui first and then to Ko Phangan (no this was not the issue). The issue was that when we arrived in Koh Samui we were given our tickets to bored the ferry to Ko Phangan only to be refused boarding, screamed at by an employee and nearly forced to purchase tickets from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan by a woman in uniform who spoke no English and seemed to be against us from the start. She grabbed our tickets (which we given to us at the desk in Koh Samui) and was saying that we hadn’t purchased tickets and continued screaming at us. It was a horrifying experience which almost costed us extra money and to miss the ferry we should’ve been on to Ko Phangan. Luckily another woman who spoke more english intervened and told the other woman she was completely wrong. The issue was that our ticket said “29th of August” because that’s when we LEFT BANGKOK. Then after the 10 hour overnight bus ride it was August 30th and the woman who was yelling at us thought we had come a day too late for the purchased tickets. Every time we tried to explain to her the situation she would scream over us. Please make your iteneraries more clear so that your future customers don’t have to deal with this. The tickets are expensive as it is, please train your employees to have better understanding of the packages you offer and to have better customer service.

The bus was very nice, we got food and drinks on the bus. Also a lot of space and comfortable seats in the bus! I give one star less because we had NO idea of the schedule of the trip. All of the sudden the bus stops in the middle of the night to eat, but everyone was asleep and didn't know what was happening, so only 4 persons went to eat and there was a lot of food. If they would have told us in advance, probably everyone would get out the bus to eat. Around 6 o'clock in the morning, all of the sudden again the bus stops and the lady - who couldn't speak one word in English and was pretty rude so the communication was very hard and bad - made gestures that we had to hurry and get out of the bus. We had no idea what was happening. We had to sit in the middle of nowhere, and a mini-van picked us up. We had noooo clue what was happening, and nobody told us because no one spoke a word in English... Finally we arrived at the boat terminal. So eventually, after a lot of changes of transport, we did arrive at Thong Sala around 11 o'clock. We still give 4 stars because everything was arranged very well, but they could have told us what was happening or give us some clear information.

Very convenient with a combined ticket (train, bus, ferry) from Bangkok to Koh Phangan. The only comment I have is arrival time was estimated at 10:45 but even though there were no delays I arrived at 12:45.

Office was very difficult to look for and women in the office did not know a word of English. The bus supposed to arrive at 4:30 came at 6pm and then dropped us off at a bus station where we had no idea what or why we were there. We were told to exit the bus and catch a new one (we were not told what bus to catch) & the bus almost left with our luggage still onboard it!! After being told to get on 3 different buses a lady who knew where we were going finally fixed the problem. We get on the bus at 8pm and head to the Donsat pier. On the way we were once again asked to leave the bus and not explained as to why. We stood outside a ladies house in Surat Thani until finally a van appears to pick us up to take us to the pier. We were told the ferry was at 8am but it wasnt until 11am. Overall a very messy and confusing 18 hours of travel.

The pick up situation is a little confusing. Maybe an additional sign next to the cafe would help. The bus had no usb charger, no blankets, and no water nor snacks which was a downer. My seat would not recline all the way. The waiting time between bus and ferry is relatively long - why not start the bus at 8pm rather than 7pm? The ferry was a little gross, and the luggage situation a little chaotic. But at the end of the day we arrived on time and in one piece, so solid 3 stars based on the cheapest price. And nice that they are the only provider for this route that has a pick up from Hua Lamphong scheduled ????????

Good service and friendly staff. I can't complain about anything. Everthing went well and exactly how they wrote it in the description. After check-in they drove us to a quiet luxurious place where we could eat dinner(nice buffet!). Then the bus came to catch us up. We had so far some more comfortable buses in Thailand but only the two of us and another couple were travelling. So we had the whole bus for us! In the morning when we arrived we could directly border the ferry and crossed over to Koh Phangan with a beautiful sunrise view. I can recommend this company.

The whole trip was great! The person at the residence took care of me; out of his own interest he shown me where the electric sockets are and gave me 2 water bottles. At 7pm sharp he took me to the hotel for buffet dinner which was exceptional! At 8pm I was lead to the bus where I've been told that Im the only one doing the trip. It gave me the comfort to choose any seats. One cons is the bus bathroom, I could smell it from couple of a meter away as soon as I entered the bus. Therefore I did my best not to drink water, so I wouldn't need to go in there. Overall it was great, thanks a lot!
