North Thai airport develops to meet demand

A senior officer with the Airports of Thailand says Chiang Mai International Airport is in the process of expanding its infrastructure. Vice-president Samai Chantorn told reporters in this northern Thai town that the enhancements are necessary so that the airport is equipped to handle ever increasing numbers of passengers.

He said various projects will be undertaken over the coming year to streamline the passenger experience at Chiang Mai. The vice-president continued by saying the process of enlarging aircraft parking bays was already underway.

He added that the airport would also be extending the international and domestic concourses as well as installing more baggage carousels and air-bridges. Outside the terminals, the plan includes adding another 320 spaces to the car park.

At present, Chiang Mai Airport handles almost 200 flights every day and is served by 25 airlines. More than 6.5 million passengers passed through the airport in 2014. This represents a 20 per cent increase when compared with the previous 12 months.
