New Myanmar airline reaches for the sky

A senior official with Myanmar’s newest airline has stated that it should operate its maiden public flight next month. Selva Kumar told local reporters that if everything went according to plan the first Apex Airlines services would be up and running by the last week of March.

The chief operations officer said the carrier would take delivery of its first aeroplane, an ATR 72-600, this month. He continued by saying two more aircraft were scheduled to arrive in June and September.

Apex’s base of operations is Nay Pyi Taw Airport. Announcing the decision to use Nay Pyi Taw rather than Yangon as its hub, an Apex statement said the new capital’s airport was modern, it only opened three years ago, and not congested as is the case with Yangon. Mr Kumar noted Nay Pyi Taw also had potential as a MICE business and convention centre.

Apex will become one of the few airlines in Myanmar to offer consumers dynamic ticket pricing when its website is up and running. This pricing system offers cheap fares for early birds, but as demand increases so do ticket prices.

Mr Kumar said Apex would initially fly domestic routes to locations such as Dawei and Yangon before expanding to destinations including Bagan, Mandalay and Tachileik. He finished off with the declaration that the long term plan was to acquire Airbus aeroplanes and fly to international airports in Southeast Asia and on the Indian subcontinent.
