Vintage car convoy begins Asian odyssey

A convoy of 70 vintage cars left Singapore yesterday morning on a Southeast Asia odyssey that will take them as far as Mandalay in modern-day Myanmar. Veteran and classic cars taking part in the rally include a 1924 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost and a 1900s Parigi Italia.

The Endurance Rally Association is staging the rally and organisers were on hand on the forecourt of Singapore’s fabled Raffles Hotel to see the drivers off. Drivers taking part are from nations such as the UK, the US and Australia.

The route from Singapore through Malaysia to the southern border of Thailand will take the grand old ladies of the road to locations such as Kuantan, the Cameron Highlands and Penang Island’s Georgetown. In Thailand, the convoy will stop at Khao Lak and Kanchanaburi before making the long northbound trip up to Chiang Mai.

After crossing into Myanmar, the convoy is scheduled to visit Naypyidaw, Mandalay and Bagan before heading south to the rally’s finishing line in Yangon on 24 February. The sight of so many vintage roadsters on highways where vehicles are most commonly Japanese autos has already caused a stir among local residents.
