In the areas surrounding the 2,500 metre summit of Inthanon Mountain, the thermometer was showing 8°C this morning and greenery and trees were shrouded with frost. People staying in tents and cabins in the national park were up early to take photographs of this rare phenomenon in a tropical country.
Chief-ranger Pornthep Charoensuebsakul says -3°C is the record low this winter, but added that meteorologists had already warned the thermometer could drop another 5°C at Kiew Lom in the coming days. He continued by saying the frost had enticed numerous visitors into making the trip.
The chief-ranger finished off with the statement that the current cold spell would undoubtedly bring in more tourists, but said staff were ready and prepared to deal with the extra traffic and crowds at the summit over the weekend. Doi Inthanon National Park is 85kms west of Chiang Mai, the most important city in northern Thailand.

Temperatures on Thailand’s highest mountain have dropped below 0°C in the past few days. Rangers at Doi Inthanon National Park reported that the temperature had dropped to -3°C at the Kiew Lom viewpoint and is expected fall even more over the weekend.
