San Carlos, Negros Occidental, Receives Clean Tourist City Award

San Carlos City from Negros Occidental, Philippines, was recognized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) as “Clean Tourist City” taking the award for the second time. The recognition is granted for two years and will be valid from 2020 to 2022.

The awards ceremony will be held at The Empire Hotel and Country Club, Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei Darussalam this coming January 16. The city is putting a lot of effort in promoting substantial tourism development and the award shows these initiatives start yielding results.

The “Clean Tourist City” award is granted to cities that endeavoured to keep their public areas beautiful and clean, protect the environment, excel in waste management, provide green urban spaces as well as safety and security for visitors and city dwellers, promote man-made and natural attractions and develop tourism infrastructure.

San Carlos is the first large city in Negros Occidental tourists come across if travelling along the national highway from Bais. While the city itself does not have much to offer in terms of tourism, it is home to a port which is an important transit point for travel between between Cebu and Negros island.

Besides San Carlos, two more cities in the Philippines received the "Clean Tourist City" award. They are Iloilo on Panay Island and Baguio on Luzon.
