Cambodia Needs New Tourism Products to Offer Visitors

Cambodia needs to create new tourism products in Siem Reap province in order to attract greater number of visitors from China and South Korea, the Minister of Tourism says.

The Ministry urged the relevant local companies and authorities to join hands to expand and upgrade the existing tourist sites in Siem Reap and to establish new tourism products that will encourage visitors to spend more time in the province. The proposal was prompted by a 20 percent drop in the number of travellers from South Korea in the first half of the year.

The tourism master plan of the Ministry is currently being studied by government. The Ministry has already selected areas where new tourism products and itineraries can be developed. It is suggested to start developing Kulen Mountain, the Tonle Sap area, and the area around the temples of Angkor.

The Ministry also encourages the authorities of Siem Reap to revamp the major streets of the city and add specialised souvenir shops catering for Chinese and Korean tourists as well as set strict controls to prevent businesses from selling counterfeit products to visitors.

In the first half of 2019, 3.3 million overseas travellers visited the Kingdom, an almost 11 percent increase on year-to-year bases. China remains the major tourism source market for Cambodia with 1.2 Chinese nationals having visited the country from January to June. It is most likely, that the 2018's figures when the country welcomed 6.2 million travellers will be surpassed this time.
