Chiang Mai balloon fest ready to hit sky

News in Asia

Organisers are busy making the final arrangements for next week’s annual balloon festival in the city of Chiang Mai. The Thailand International Balloon Festival 2014 is scheduled to take place at the northern city’s Gymkhana Sports Club on the 6 and 7 December.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) officially endorses this colourful extravaganza. The balloon festival has been a fixture on Thailand’s events calendar since 2006 and it regularly attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

Balloons grace the sky both in the daytime and the evening. Visitors in previous years say the sight of gaily lit balloons in the night sky is almost surreal. This year’s programme sees a mass-balloon launch at 06:00 each day and this is followed by a model balloon show.

The balloon nightglow is scheduled to coincide with nightfall on each evening. The attractions of the festival are not just limited to balloons. There are family-oriented activities, a dog show, a charity draw and musical concerts with the likes of Nantida and Drums United set to take the stage as well.

Tickets are on sale on the International Balloon Festival’s own website. People already in Chiang Mai can buy tickets from Rimping Supermarket branches at locations including Nim City, Nawarat and Maya Lifestyle Shopping Mall.
