Vietnam resort town airport to get upgrade

Officials at the airport serving the Vietnamese resort town of Nha Trang say the facility is to be upgraded. They say the revamp is needed at Cam Ranh Airport so that it can accommodate more international flights.

Figures released for 2013 show Cam Ranh handled 1.5 million passengers. This is 100,000 short of the facility’s annual capacity. It currently serves domestic flights and international airlines flying from South Korea and Russia. Carriers from Cambodia, China and India are believed to have expressed interest in flying to Cam Ranh.

The airport only has one runway and Khanh Hoa governor Nguyen Chien Thang told reporters that this was slowly deteriorating and needed repairing. The governor said the airport could not shut the runway to effect repairs as it was in constant use.

He continued by saying the government of Nguyen Tan Dung had authorised the provincial administration to seek loans equivalent to US$47 million to construct a second runway at Cam Ranh. He finished off by saying that construction should start early in the new year and that the province will also be looking for low-interest funding to repair the original runway.

Cam Ranh Airport is just over 30kms from Nha Trang. The majority of its flight arrivals originate in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It currently handles around 15 flights per day.
