Thailand Boasts the Highest Tourist Expenditure in the Region

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) reported that Thailand tops the list of Asian countries with the highest international visitors spending of USD57 billion in 2017; ahead of Japan (USD34 billion), Hong Kong (USD33 billion), China (USD33 billion) and Taiwan (USD12 billion).

Both credit cards and cash reciepts were calculated while preparing the report. It is also mentioned that there are options for tourists in all the price ranges on offer – from cheap street food and affordable guesthouses to luxurious villas and spas on private islands and private yacht charters.

According to UNWTO prediction, the tourist expenditure will most likely increase the next year as a result of multiple strong promotional campaigns aimed at drawing more tourists to Thailand and encouraging them to spend more.

Earlier this year, MasterCard’s annual Global Destination Cities Index 2018 placed Bangkok on the 1st place among the world's most visited cities, while Phuket (12th) and Pattaya (18th) are also performing strong.

The top-10 countries which were the main spenders in Thailand during the first nine months of 2018 are as follows: China, Russia, Malaysia, South Korea, USA, UK, Japan, India, Australia, Germany.
