China airline launches new Cambodia route

Chinese carrier Shandong Airlines has announced it is launching a route linking its home base to Cambodia’s two principal air gateways. A spokesperson for the Cambodian Civil Aviation Division said the first flight from Jinan was due to operate today, but was still awaiting final approval.

Sin Chansereyvutha stated that when the route is running to schedule there will be two flights a week in each direction between Jinan and Cambodia. The flights will land at Phnom Penh Airport and Siem Reap Airport. The latter serves the town of the same name and is the main entry point for the fabled Angkor Wat temple complex.

Chansereyvutha added that the new flights were compelling evidence that relations between Cambodia and China were strengthening and that tourists were travelling between the two nations. Figures released by the Cambodian Tourism Ministry show that 275,000 Chinese nationals visited in the first six months of 2014. This is a 20 per cent increase on the same period for 2013.

TTR Weekly reported that Shandong Airlines was the ninth Chinese airline operating flight routes to Cambodia. Shandong Airlines was launched in 1994 and now operates an extensive network of domestic flights as well as international ones to Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.
