New Airports Planned, Existing to Be Expanded in Isaan, Thailand

The encreasing passenger traffic in the northeastern provinces of Thailand calls for expansion of the existing airports and shows potential for new ones as well.

The three provinces which will probably see their airports upgraded or constructed soon are Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon and Mukdahan.

Ubon Ratchathani does already have its airport which serves commercial flights mostly between Ubon Ratchathani and the both of Bangkok's airports with several Fly-n-Ride deals offered by Nok Air from Don Mueang to other Isaan destinations including Mukdahan, Sisaket, Yasothon and Amnat Charoen via Ubon Ratchathani airport. There are also flights to Pattaya's U-Tapao airport and Chiang Mai. This week, 2.3 billion baht has been approved for construction of the second passenger terminal in Ubon which will be ready by 2024 and increase the airport capacity to 5 million passengers per year.

A feasibility study of turning Yasothon Loeng Nok Tha army airport into a commercial air hub is well under way and should be completed before April, 2019. It will help make the choice where a new commeciarl airport will finally appear – in the province of Mukdahan, bordering Laos, or in Yasothon, 110 southwest of the border crossing. Currently there is a palpable need for an airport which will provide convenient access to the Savan-Seno Special Economic Zone across the Mekong River in Laos thus boosting the regional ecomony.
