Annual Bo Sang handicrafts fair to stage at weekend

The coming weekend will see Bo Sang Village in Chiang Mai Province hold its annual handicrafts fair.  The Thai tourism bureau says the festival will provide visitors with the chance of seeing collections of the famous Bo Sang umbrellas, live music and parades.

A statement released by tourism officials notes a definitive highlight of the 2018 fair will be the beauties on bikes pageant. This will feature local belles clad in traditional costumes holding signature Bo Sang umbrellas. There will also be vendors selling Chiang Mai and Thai snacks, meals and juices.

The three-day Bo Sang Handicrafts Festival kicks off on Friday the 19 January. Bo Sang is a flagship of the multi-faceted handicrafts industries and factories in the eastern San Kamphaeng zone of Chiang Mai. It is a little over 20kms from the city’s railway station and a few more from Thapae Gate

The tradition of Bo Sang’s umbrella production is said to have originated with a Burmese monk passing through Bo Sang. He showed villagers how to make sunlight and rain resistant paper from the bark of mulberry trees and then fabricate umbrellas from it.
