Thailand to kickstart UNESCO listing application for Andaman zone

A senior Thai nature conservation officer has revealed a plan to dust off an application to have the Andaman Sea region of the nation UNESCO listed. At a press briefing last week, doctor Chamniern Vorratnchaianan said the application process had begun again and was likely to include the chunk of Andaman coastline from Phang Nga Bay down to Satun.

The doctor continued by saying researchers had started the process of bringing details relating to the bay, Phuket Island and other offshore islands down to Malaysia up to date. He explained that the reason for the updates was the information collated for the last application in 2015 was now outdated.

AS well as 2015, previous attempts to get a Tentative Listing as a Marine UNESCO World Heritage Site were made in 2014 and 2004. Doctor Vorratnchaianan said the previous applications had not met the exacting criteria required under UNESCO’s Outstanding Universal Values.

12GO ASIA’s travel experts say that UNESCO listing or no UNESCO listing, Phang Nga Bay, the beaches of western Phuket, the Koh Phi Phi islands and Ao Nang Bay are stunningly beautiful. The limestone karsts which epitomise Phang Nga Bay are a dramatic backdrop to any holiday here.
