Revamp of southern Hat Yai Airport picks up steam

An Airports of Thailand (AoT) representative gave updates on the progress of improvements at Hat Yai Airport earlier this week. The main terminal enhancements will see annual passenger handling capacity increased from 2.5 million to 4.5 million.

Lifts to provide better access for the disabled have already been installed. An expansion of the domestic and international passenger zones which includes the installation of additional check-in desks kicked off last year and is ongoing.

Other projects to be completed over the next two years are adding two more aircraft parking bays, enlarging the car park and upgrading the security system on the perimeter fence.  Once the current round of improvements is complete, AoT says more will be carried out to increase flight handling capacity and a new terminal will be built.

12GO ASIA notes that Hat Yai Airport is the gateway to Songkhla Province as well as the other southern provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat, Satun and Yala. Scheduled and budget airlines fly here from both of Bangkok’s airports, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
