Yangon to rein in rogue bus drivers with GPS monitors

The Yangon Region Transport Authority says it is in the process of equipping vehicles under its jurisdiction with GPS units. An authority spokesperson says the devices are a tool in the fight to curtail the notoriously bad driving endemic among the Myanmar city’s bus drivers.

Transport Authority spokesperson U Than Win noted that in excess of 100 buses had already been fitted with GPS devices. He added these would be used to check on the behaviour of Yangon Bus Service drivers and to make sure they kept to designated routes and timetables.

B Smart Company is providing the GPS units and fitting them for free. U Than Win explained that B Smart would earn income to the tune of MMK400 a day from operating and maintaining the units.

Yangon Bus Service’s franchisees operate buses on routes to most locations in the city including all the main transportation hubs. 12GO ASIA provides ticketing choices to and from these interchanges. Among these are flights from Chiang Mai and Singapore and buses to Mandalay.
