Yangon central market building gets Blue Plaque heritage listing

Yangon’s Heritage Trust has designated Bogyoke Aung San Market as an important historical and cultural landmark. In recognition of the iconic market’s importance to the Myanmar city, the Heritage Trust put up a Blue Plaque at an official designation ceremony last week.

The YHT citation noted that the market has been an integral part of Yangon’s cityscape since it welcomed its first customers 90 years ago. The report explained that since the complex opened as Scott Market during British colonial rule it had been the shopping destination of choice for Yangon residents.

Stalls at the market are loaded down with a huge range of products including fine fabrics, sarongs, gemstones, clothing, footwear and cheap technology products. As Myanmar’s fledgling tourist industry has evolved, stallholders have added souvenirs, antiques, curios, paintings and other art works to the goods on offer.

Bogyoke Aung San Market is the 16th location in the city to be awarded Blue Plaque status. Heritage Trust chairperson Thant Myint-U said the market offered a taste of the bazaars of yesteryear and to a time long before huge shopping malls started sprouting up on the horizon.

Yangon is the gateway to Myanmar and most visitors include Bogyoke Aung San Market on their sightseeing itineraries. 12GO ASIA is a reliable source for air tickets to Yangon from Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
